July 2008


Karon King gave the presentation Patent and Trademark Searching for the Very Nervous: Reference Forum for the Central LSA for 5 attendees.

Michele Leininger taught:

  • Adventures in Storytelling:  Fantasy for public library staff; 43 participants
  • Creating a Readers Advisory Service; 17 participants


Mary Wegner participated in a panel discussion on leadership for about 25 participants in the Iowa Library Association Leadership Institute.

State Library sponsored Teaching Computer Skills to the Public taught by Kim Van Deest and Dreama Deskins, 10 sessions, 113 participants

August 2008


Michele Leininger taught Cooperative Readers Advisory; 20 participants.

September 2008


Beth Henning gave a presentation, Using Hard Data to Build Strong Proposals, to 90 attendees at the Iowa Grants Symposium in Ames.

Staff members Scott Dermont, Sandy Dixon, Marie Harms, Michele Leininger, Jay Peterson and Mary Wegner presented at seven Town Meetings; 407 participants.  The morning session was The Engaged Library.  In the afternoon:

  • Jay Peterson taught Databases in an Engaged Library
  • Michele Leininger taught Collection Driven Services
  • Sandy Dixon and Mary Wegner taught Money Matters:  Special Library Levy and Community Foundations

 

October 2008


Karon King gave the presentation Calling Inventors: Protecting Your Idea for Des Moines Community Education for 6 attendees.

Sandy Dixon taught Effective Board Relations at the ILA conference; 26 attended.

Marie Harms and Sandy Dixon gave an update on the Shared Automation Project at the ILA Conference; 17 attended.
Michele Leininger taught:

  • Adventures in Storytelling:  Historical Fiction; 45 participants.
  • Shaken & Stirred:  RA and Genre Publishing Today at the ILA conference; 22 attendees.


Tim Skeers was on the panel discussion Electronic Resources Cataloging at the Iowa Library Association Annual Conference for 20 attendees.

Pam Rees gave a presentation about State Library services to medical professionals at the Washington County Hospital for 17 attendees.

Mary Wegner gave the annual State Library Update at the Iowa Library Association conference.

Nate Jarchow and Marie Harms taught Pac’d to Go: Acquiring, Installing and Managing Public Computers for 28 participants.

Karen Randleman facilitated 15 workshops about the 2009 Summer Library Program.  504 librarians attended 11 workshops covering the children’s program and 176 librarians participated in 4 workshops about the teen program.

November 2008


Pam Rees gave a presentation about State Library services to medical professionals at the Jefferson County Hospital for 22 attendees.

Sandy Dixon and Mary Wegner taught The Engaged Library for trustees; 103 participants.

Mary Wegner spoke at the grand opening of the Sioux Center Public Library, and gave a presentation about Library Collaboration the following day at a continuing education session attended by about 30 librarians from northwest Iowa.

December 2008


Pam Rees gave a presentation about State Library services to medical professionals at the Henry County Health Center for15 attendees, at the Marengo Memorial Hospital for 27 and 2 presentations at the Waverly Health Center for 30 attendees.

Pam Rees gave a presentation about State Library services to medical professionals at the Henry County Hospital for 15 attendees.

Beth Henning gave a 2010 Census presentation to the 15 members of the Iowa Association of Regional Councils (IARC).

Annette Wetteland taught an online class sponsored by Southwest LSA on working with the news media for 12 attendees.

January 2009


Barb Corson gave a presentation about State Library Services to around 100 clerks during the House and Senate orientation.

Karon King gave the presentations Patent Application Dissection for the Faint of Heart for Des Moines Community Education for 9 attendees and Trademark-Logo Searching for the Entrepreneur for 12 attendees.

Pam Rees gave 3 presentations about State Library services to medical professionals at the Van Buren County Hospital for 43 attendees.

Marie Harms held one PLOW Work Day in Aplington. 14 attended.

Marie Harms taught Introduction to Directory and E-mail Services and Getting Your Web Site Started, the first two classes in PLOW Round 3, in 4 locations, 8 sessions, 104 attended.

February 2009


Sandy Dixon facilitated a retreat for the Iowa Small Library Association.

March 2009


Tom Keyser gave a basic book repair workshop to 6 of the staff of the Norwalk public Library.

Karen Randleman taught Early Literacy for Story Hour for public librarians; 62 attended.

Marie Harms taught Customizing Your Web Site, the third class in PLOW Round 3, in 4 locations, 8 sessions, 104 attended


April 2009


During National Library Week in April the following staff taught classes: Pam Rees, Reliable Health Information – Where Can I Find It on the Internet?, 1 session, 10 students; Jay Peterson, Get the Most from EBSCOHost, 2 sessions, 12 students and Survey of Popular Social Networking Websites, 2 sessions, 22 students; Barb Corson, Searching FirstSearch Databases, 2 sessions, 10 students; Karen Randleman, How to Raise a Reader, 1 session, 1 student; Marie Harms, More than Just Google:  Internet Searching, 3 sessions, 35 students and Using an ICN Classroom: An Overview, 2 classes, 4 students; Beth Henning, Iowa’s Population: Past, Present, and Future, 1 session, 20 students; Tom Keyser, Save Your Documents: Iowa Publications Online, 1 session, 2 students; Karon King, Patent Searching Made Easy, 2 sessions, 3 students, Trademark Empowerment, 1 session, 1 student, and Digital Sanborn Maps, 1 session, 9 students.

Scott Dermont provided an overview of the new annual survey for LSA staff; 18 attended.
Sandy Dixon taught Evaluating the Library Director for trustees; 77 attended.

Sandy Dixon facilitated a strategic planning retreat for the Sioux City Public Library.

Marie Harms presented at CILSA’s ILL Roundtable; 17 attended

Marie Harms presented at the Prairieland User’s Group meeting of Sirsi-Dynix users in Iowa in Burlington; 45 attended

Karon King gave the presentations The Other IP: Trademarks and Patents for a class at Drake University with 22 students and The Problem with Patent Searching at the Annual PTDL Training Seminar for 86 attendees.

Jay Peterson taught EBSCOhost and Annette Wetteland taught a session on how to do publicity at the Kids First conference.

Mary Wegner gave a State Library update for the attendees of the Iowa Private Academic Libraries conference (approximately 40) and the attendees of the Iowa Library Association/Association of College and Research Libraries conference (approximately 75).

May 2009


Barb Corson gave a presentation about the Iowa Heritage Digital Collection during a break out session for the IA/OCLC Users Group Conference to 15 attendees.

Mary Wegner presented a State Library Update for the attendees (approximately 60) of the Iowa OCLC Users’ Group conference.

Gary Krob gave a presentation about the State Data Center Web site and services to 8 librarians at the monthly meeting of the Polk County Biomedical Consortium.

Marie Harms taught PLOW Training for Library Staff. 2 sessions for 9 participants.

Marie Harms presented at ILA Support Staff Forum’s Technology Petting Zoo in Waterloo; 75 participants.
June 2009
