Nationally known library organizational development consultant, Maureen Sullivan, lead a four-day institute for 22 lucky librarians who were chosen to participate in the 2010 Iowa Library Leadership Institute. During the institute, which is coordinated by the Iowa Library Association (ILA), participants assessed their personal leadership style and developed the confidence and skills to become change agents in their libraries as well as the larger community.
State Librarian Mary Wegner took part in a panel discussion on the first day and said the State Library "is pleased to help fund the Leadership Institute" using federal funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
On August 10, attendees studied leadership in libraries today, understanding your work and leadership styles, and took part in a panel discussion with ILA library leaders Sheryl Bissen (academic library), Devon Murphy-Peterson (public library), Barbara Peterson (public library) and Wegner.
August 11 topics included the leader's role in fostering experimentation and risk taking, creativity and innovation, leading change, and transforming libraries - inspiring shared vision.
On August 12, the group discussed transforming libraries - creating a culture of commitment and high performance, managing differences, and working with groups and teams.
Topics for August 13 were leading from the middle, achieving your potential - personal planning, and guidelines for continuing your leadership development.
