Programs announced for Town Meetings

Jay Peterson and Marie Harms in Town Meeting skit 2009

Internet access is now one of the most sought after public library services and is used by nearly half of all library visitors.  In the morning, we will discuss the ways library patrons use library computers, why they use them and how they affect their lives.  This part of the program will be based on a newly released report "Opportunity for All:  How the American Public Benefits from Internet Access at U.S. Libraries."  We will also hear from our friends at the Iowa Library Association.

The afternoon sessions include:

Job Seekers in Libraries:  According to a recent study, 40% of people who use library computers and the Internet do so for employment and career reasons.  In this informal and interactive session, you will hear briefly from Iowa Workforce Development (IWD) about the employment trends in your part of the state.  Afterwards, join IWD, Sandy Dixon and Alysia Peich for a discussion about ideas for serving job seekers in the library.

The New Standards:  The State Library and the Standards Advisory Task Force have developed a new edition of "In Service to Iowa: Public Library Measures of Quality."  This session will highlight what's new and will give you an opportunity to get your questions answered.

Public Library Computing---the Librarians role in maintaining Opportunity for All:  This course will cover current trends and issues regarding public library computing and provide practical solutions to public library computing.  Session will cover basics of computer resource management, cost effective solutions for updating computer hardware and software, discussion of the E-rate process to assist your library in the continuing maintenance cost of public computers in your library, and a general discussion of the purpose and mission of computers in your library.

Annual town meetings provide opportunities to learn about major issues affecting libraries, gain ideas for improving programs and services and get to know State Library and Library Service Area staff better. We will be coming to a location near you September 9 – 22.  Please visit the CE Catalog for dates, locations and registration.
