Plan now to attend new youth services classes

A literacy story hour session and a three-part class for new library staff who work with youngsters are planned in March and April.

Karen Randleman, the State Library's Youth Services Coordinator, has prepared four important programs for librarians who work with children.

  • "Make a Splash, READ!" Literacy Story Hour

Suggestions for story hours during the summer 2010 library program "Make a Splash!" will be explored.  Included will be titles that both fit the theme and encompass the six literacy components library staff have always used.

10 a.m. to 11 a.m. March 17, ICN (sign up).

  • Collection Management

This three-part class is designed specifically for new library staff who work with juvenile collections and need more background on the subject.  Attend one class or all three.

1.  Collections:  The Foundation's Gotta Come First

Before you start working on your collection, you need to know the elements of a good collection policy and why you should have one.  Learn good review sources for youth titles and be familiar with collection issues such as multiculturalism, sexism and popularity vs. quality.

10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 14, Adobe Online (sign up)

2.  Collection Management - Purchasing, Maintenance and Weeding

What factors need to be considered in establishing a children's materials budget?  Accessibility:  collections, shelving, cataloging.  Weeding:  turnover rates and the CREW method.

10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 21, Adobe Online (sign up)

3.  Book Challenges

Do I have to take it off the shelf?  What do I do now?

10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 28, Adobe Online (sign up)
