Sign Up Now for Iowa Stories 2000

Attention Iowa public librarians and school media specialists! First Lady Christie Vilsack announces the fall sign up for Year 3 of her Iowa Stories 2000 literacy project.  Fifty Iowa libraries so far have become Literacy Communities involved in projects that have been of great benefit to their citizens. This cooperative effort between public librarians and school media specialists involves people from the community in determining a project that will benefit an under-served segment of a town's population and bring new patrons into the library.

No community is too small or too large to participate. From the tiny town of Bayard in Guthrie County to the Public Library of Des Moines, librarians all across the state are learning how this initiative can improve services for their customers. To become an Iowa Stories 2000 Literacy Community, contact one of the State Library's AmeriCorps Promise Fellows (Anne, Joe, or Steve) who facilitate the programs for each participating library. They may be reached at 515-242-3811 or by e-mail at Promise@mail.lib.state.ia.us.  Sign up deadline is September 30. If you would like further information regarding Iowa Stories 2000, check out Mrs. Vilsack's web site, www.christievilsack.org. An information packet is also available. We will be happy to supply one to interested communities.
