State Library of Iowa and the Iowa Department of Education will collaborate on program
Continuing his efforts to bolster educational resources for Iowans, Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that Iowa Public Television received $226,583 from Partnership for a Nation of Learners (PNL), a leadership initiative sponsored by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Iowa Public Television, in conjunction with the State Library of Iowa and the Iowa Department of Education, will use these funds to bring literacy programs to Latino families with children 5 years old and younger. Harkin is the ranking Democrat on the Senate panel that funds the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
"This will be a fabulous opportunity for librarians in Iowa to work with Latino families and develop relationships for literacy and library use," said Mary Cameron, youth services consultant for the State Library of Iowa.
Specifically, Iowa Public Television, the State Library of Iowa and the Iowa Department of Education will use these funds to pair librarians with children’s resource programs and offer family book clubs with hands-on activities to increase families’ literacy activities and public library use. The program expects to increase family engagement in reading and early literacy activities, support family viewing and other learning strategies with PBS children's programming, and cultivate awareness of local adult literacy resources. PNL Community Collaboration Grants aim to help museums, libraries, and public broadcasters work together to help audiences gain knowledge, skills, attitudes, behaviors, and resources that enhance their engagement in community, work, family, and society.
“I am very pleased that this funding will help Iowa Public Television, the State Library of Iowa and the Iowa Department of Education bring literacy programs to Latino families with young children,” Harkin said. “Providing young children with a strong foundation in reading helps them become skilled readers and opens a world of opportunities to them.”
