"The Splendid Solution: Jonas Salk and the Conquest of Polio" by Jeffrey Kluger.

Jeffrey Kluger, a senior writer at Time is the author of this year's 2007 All Iowa Reads selection, The Splendid Solution:  Jonas Salk and the Conquest of Polio."

In its review of the book, Library Journal (January, 2005) said:  "Drawing on Salk's personal papers and the March of Dimes archives -- along with extensive interviews with Salk's sons and other key players -- Kluger (Lost Moon, the basis for the Apollo 13 movie) wonderfully illustrates the complexity of Salk's personality and how his tenacity helped to push forward the concept of a killed vaccine despite a great deal of opposition.  Kluger nicely complements (an earlier account of Salk in Richard Carter's Breakthrough) by providing a fresh look at events based on a historical perspective of the disease's progress and eradication attempts by the World Health Organization.

The All Iowa Reads Web site, http://www.iowacenterforthebook.org/air/2007 includes more information, including where to purchase or borrow the book,  discussion questions, suggestions for further reading, and help for starting a first time discussion group.  Publicity information including a news release, will be available soon.
