Plan Now for Lincoln Bicentennial Birthday Celebration

Last modified July 11, 2008 07:32 AM

Pam Rees, medical librarian, State Library, is on the Iowa Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Committee.

On February 12, 2009, the nation will celebrate the 200th birthday of President Abraham Lincoln. The Iowa Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Committee (IALBC) would like to be able to promote and endorse the Lincoln activities and programs that Iowa towns and libraries will be involved in over the next couple of years. The official bicentennial celebrations  run from February 12, 2008, to February 12, 2010.

The address of the IALBC  web site is: http://www.iowalincoln200.org/ To have your event endorsed, click on the button on the main page that says "Event Endorsement."

This web page contains many ideas and suggestions in helping you plan events to celebrate Lincoln's birthday. Abraham Lincoln had a variety of connections to Iowa and Iowans. Grant Veeder, the Black Hawk County Auditor and a member of the Iowa Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, has prepared a PowerPoint presentation to illustrate and discuss these connections.  He is available to give the presentation to groups and organizations at no charge (other than reimbursement of travel expenses).

The presentation, entitled “All Thanks, All Honor to Iowa!  Abraham Lincoln and the Hawkeye State,” lasts about 25-30 minutes, not counting time for questions and answers.  If you are interested in having Grant give his presentation at a meeting, or if you would like more information, contact him at gveeder@co.black-hawk.ia.us

Mr. Stan DeHaan and Mr. Lee Williams are Iowans who enjoy portraying Lincoln for all kinds of groups. There is an Abraham Lincoln activity and coloring book for children, fun Lincoln trivia facts in Iowa as well as information about Lincoln's visits to Iowa.

So, please let us know of your plans to celebrate Lincoln's birthday and  send your ideas, plans, and questions regarding the IALBC to Walter Reed, Jr., Director of the Department of Human Rights at walter.reed@iowa.gov or Darla R. Welch, Administrative Secretary at (515) 242-5655 or darla.welch@iowa.gov. We look forward to working with you to ensure that the national bicentennial celebration includes an Iowa commemorative of the accomplishments of President Abraham Lincoln.
