This webinar is designed to help library staff, trustees and community discussion leaders plan a discussion of the 2013 All Iowa Reads (AIR) selection "The Year We Left Home" by National Book Award finalist Jean Thompson.
"When the Erickson family of Grenada, Iowa, gathers for the wedding of their eldest daughter, Anita, fault lines in the family emerge. The bride wants nothing more than to raise a family in her hometown, while her brother Ryan watches restlessly from the sidelines, planning his escape. Joined by their cousin Chip, an unpredictable, war-damaged loner, the two begin a perilous journey to 'freedom.' Torrie, the Ericksons' youngest daughter, another rebel intent on escape, makes choices that bring about a tragedy that leaves the entire family changed forever."
The AIR Webinar elements include:
--mini reviews of books that were AIR finalists this year
--review of the criteria used to select "The Year We Left Home"
--resources available on the Iowa Center for the Book Website
--tips on how to make your discussion successful
--availability of multiple copies to use for your discussion
--adding your upcoming program to the Iowa Center for the Book AIR Calendar of Events
--in-depth exchange between Susan Craig, Director of the Iowa City Public Library, and George Minot, Professor of English at Kirkwood Community College, who will summarize the story, introduce the characters, and identify topics and themes important to librarians planning their own discussions
--participant chat and questions throughout
Note that this year that we will not host the program on the ICN. An archive of the webinar will be on Iowa Library Services website for librarians who cannot attend the live session.
