The national “Letters About Literature” (LAL) reading/writing contest offers a unique opportunity for librarians to mentor readers grades 4-12 who frequent their libraries. However, few librarians know about the program and how they can help young readers participate.

This session will lay out the purpose and successes of LAL in Iowa; explore the authors and themes that emerge in the books that students choose to read; and show how librarians can mentor students individually or collaboratively with local educators. The wealth of helpful resources available at www.iowacenterforthebook.org and www.lettersaboutliterature.org will be shared.
