Dara Schmidt, Director of the Cedar Rapids Public Library, is one of 28 librarians from across the country selected to attend the prestigious PLA Leadership Academy this spring in Portland, Oregon.
This career-changing program is designed to empower public librarian participants with the knowledge necessary to be innovative and successful leaders of change. Its groundbreaking focus develops the skills needed to work with municipal officials to enhance the position and effectiveness of the library and its activities within the community.
“I am honored to be chosen as one of the 2017 PLA leadership fellows,” said Schmidt. “This participatory program pairs mentors from libraries across the country as well as city and county leaders with emerging leaders in the library field to tackle real issues and be change agents. I couldn’t be more excited to dig in and bring some great ideas back to Iowa libraries.”
The selective Academy—more than 130 applied for this year’s program—centers on a dynamic in-person event of more than three days of interactive education and colleague networking that offers thought-provoking lectures and breakout discussions. Schmidt will travel to Portland to participate in the Academy March 20-24.
As a PLA Fellow, Schmidt will also be required to later implement a project at the Cedar Rapids Public Library. The project should be designed to exemplify the academy curriculum, integrating library and city goals while influencing larger library initiatives.
Congratulations to Dara on this remarkable opportunity!
