Session 10 - Community Analysis: Who are these people and what do they want?

Community analysis involves the systematic collection, organization, and analysis of information about a community and its library. Community analysis is, perhaps, the most important tool a library board and staff can use to change from being a passive or reactive library to an assertive library. The information gained can be used as a rationale for funding, programs, and services. It will also be valuable to city and county personnel, economic development staff, and can become a tool for the entire community.

The philosophy and procedures involved in community analysis are not difficult but take time and thought. This session can only introduce the concept and give a broad picture of the steps involved.

Learning Objectives for Session 10:

  • To understand the importance of knowing who is in your community
  • To examine ways to build relationships between the library and various community groups and organizations
  • To understand the following standards, as listed in In Service To Iowa:
  1. Standard 11 (p. 7)
  2. Standards 47-49 (p. 17)
  3. Appendix B (p. 26)

Assignments for class:

Extra Assignment:

Before class, drive through any nearby town noticing impressions you get about that community as a whole and the local library in particular.  Walk through the library noticing both positive and negative impressions.  This assignment will be discussed in class and is part of the web board assignment.
