Section III: Assessment of Current Status

What to Include:

Include an assessment of the telecommunication services, hardware, software, and other services that will be needed to improve education or library services.

Libraries may submit the information in narrative, detailing the use and intent of equipment.  An inventory sheet may also be included. A sample inventory assessment is for your use if you choose.  Use the tool Tech Atlas as an easy way to create an inventory.   If you have an ICN room, make sure to include ICN equipment information in the narrative assessment. The State Library does have inventory sheets of all ICN libraries in case you are requested this information in an audit.

Sample Wording for Assessment of Current Status - "The library has nine computers. Two computer workstations have Internet connectivity. One is for staff use and the other is for patron use. Both computers have color ink jet printers. The library has been automated and has a main server which is networked to three other computer workstations, one at the circulation desk and two PACs. The library uses Winnebago Library Automation software. There is a CD-ROM computer with patron access. The computer is used for CD-ROM programs and word processing, etc. This computer is used everyday, especially by children after school. It is connected to a color ink jet printer. The two other older computers are located in the lower level of the library and are used only for word processing when the newer computer is not available. Staff is constantly striving to learn more about technology and how to use it in the library."

"The library has videoconferencing capabilities for the community with a meeting room equipped with Iowa Communications Network equipment purchased in 1997. This equipment still continues to function adequately and the ICN maintains the fiber optic equipment and connection in the state-owned equipment room."

"The library has four telephone lines. One is accessible by the public, two lines provide access to library staff to conduct library business and provide reference service, and the fourth line provides fax service. The public access phone provides local service only. The staff and fax telephone lines provide local and long distance access."

"The library has five telephone lines. Three lines provide access for staff, one is a fax line, and one is for public access for local calling. These lines are carried on a DSL circuit to the library."

"The phone service for the library is provided through a CENTREX switching system provided by the local telephone company. The library has 10 lines which have forwarding and rollover functions."
