Summer Library Program

summer library program
Children who don’t read over the summer tend to lose literacy skills
while children who do read during the summer actually improve their
reading ability. In a study conducted in North Carolina, children in every income group who read six or more books over the
summer gained more in reading achievement than children who did not.
The State Library of Iowa believes strongly in the importance of a Summer Library program and, with the public libraries around the State, promotes a vigorous Summer Library program.
As a paid member of the national Collaborative Summer Library Program, each year the State Library provides a summer library program for public libraries. Each library receives:
- Free children's and teen program manuals for the current theme
- Free
summer library program workshops usually held in October and November
- A chance to order materials at a group rate.
