Continuing Education

The goal of the State Library's Continuing Education program is to help library staff acquire, maintain and develop their skills in order to provide the best service possible to their customers and community. 

Part of our Continuing Education program focuses on Public Librarian Certification.  Our Public Library Management 1 (PLM 1) and Public Library Management 2 (PLM 2) classes are offered regularly to help public library directors become certified.  Since having a certified director is part of the requirements for Direct State Aid, we give first priority to current public library directors.  For more information on the order in which we admit people into the Public Library Managment classes, please click here.

The program requires library staff to renew their certificates by applying for recertification which requires a minimum of 45 Continuing Education contact hours every three years.  The State Library offers a wide array of classes in person, over the ICN and over the Web to help librarians accomplish this.

We adhere to a high standard of learning principles, so each of our classes have:

• stated learning objectives
• activities that are used to meet those objectives
• an evaluation process to make sure those objectives are met
• a knowledgeable instructor or consultant conducting the training
