How To: Configure Outlook Express for the First Time

Initial Configuration

  1. Start Outlook Express.
  2. If a window pops up asking, "Outlook Express is not currently your default mail client. Would you like to make it yo ur default mail client?", click on the Yes button.
  3. Because Outlook Express has not been configured before, the Internet Connection Wizard will start automatically.
  4. In the Display name: field, enter your full name.
  5. Click on the Next button.
  6. In the E-Mail address: field, enter your full e-mail address, e.g. username@cityname.lib.ia.us.
  7. Click on the Next button.
  8. From the My incoming mail server is a... menu, select the IMAP option.
  9. In the Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server: field, enter mail.cityname.lib.ia.us where cityname is the name of your city as it appears in your domain name.
  10. In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server: field, enter mail.cityname.lib.ia.us where cityname is the name of your city as it appears in your domain name.
  11. Click on the Next button
  12. In the Account name: field, enter your full e-mail address, e.g. username@cityname.lib.ia.us
  13. In the Password: field, enter your password
  14. Click on the Next button
  15. Click on the Finish button
  16. If a window pops up, asking "There are not any folders to show for this account. Would you like to view a list of available folders now?", click on the Yes button
  17. Select the Spam folder
  18. Click on the Show button
  19. Select the Trash folder
  20. Click on the Show button
  21. Click on the OK button

Additional Settings That Must Be Changed

  1. Pull-down the Tools menu and select the Options... option
  2. Select the Send tab
  3. From the Mail Sending Format menu select the Plain Text option
  4. Click on the OK button
  5. Pull-down the Tools menu and select the Accounts... option
  6. Select the Mail tab
  7. Click on the Properties button
  8. Select the Servers tab
  9. Check the My server requires authentication checkbox at the bottom of the window
  10. Select the Advanced tab
  11. In the Outgoing Mail (SMTP): field, enter 587
  12. Click on the OK button
  13. Click on the Close button
