CIP (Cataloging in Process) records are brief MARC records produced before an item is published. In most MARC record databases CIP records are replaced by full MARC records once the item is published. The CIP records may be exported from a library's local system with a batch of MARC records destined for the SILO Locator. CIP records do not contain enough of the necessary tags and subfields to meet the SILO Locator minimal MARC record input standards.
RECOMMENDATION: Encourage library staff to replace CIP records with full MARC records once the item is added to the collection. There is usually no way to exclude CIP records from an export process, so when these records show up in the library's exception list, library staff will have to delete them from the list. The next time the library sends records to SILO, the replaced record will match and merge and be loaded into the Locator.
