How to Add an External Link to a Folder

Create a Folder to hold the links

  1. Navigate to the folder or place that you wish to have the new folder of links
  2. Click on the Contents tab
  3. Click on the Add New... tab and select Folder
  4. Add shortname
  5. Add title
  6. Add Description, i.e. "Here is a collection of links specially chosen for ..."
  7. Click on the Save button

 

Collect the URL of the first link to be added

 

  1. Open a new tab in your browser Hint: Ctrl + T is a keyboard shortcut to open a new tab
  2. In the address bar of the browser, type in the URL of the page you want to link to
  3. OR - search for and navigate to the page you want to link to
  4. Collect the URL by highlighting the URL and copying it to the clipboard Hint: Use Ctrl + C or Edit -> Copy
  5. Use the browser tabs to go back to your library's Web site

Add the External Links

  1. Verify that you are IN the newly created folder - the one that will contain the links
  2. Navigate to the newly created folder if necessary
  3. Click on Add New... and select Link
  4. Add shortname
  5. Add title
  6. Add description
  7. Click in the URL field and clear out the existing http://
  8. Paste in the URL that you collected earlier Hint: Use Ctrl + V or Edit -> Paste
  9. Click on the Save button
  10. At this point the browser navigates to the new page and leaves the library's PLOW Web site. Use the browser's back button to return to the library's Web site. You are returned to the page where you were entering the information about the link.

  11. Click the CANCEL button
  12. Click on the folder name from the breadcrumb trail.
Confirm message
This message appears when attempting to navigate away from a page in edit mode without saving first.

 

A pop-up "Confirm message" will appear is you navigate away from the page without clicking the Cancel button. Click the OK button in the pop-up box

Publish the link

  1. From the folder that contains the link, click on the Contents tab
  2. Click in the box next to the unpublished link
  3. Click on the Change State button at the bottom of the table
  4. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and select Publish from the "Change State" menu
  5. Click on the Save button
