How To Add Your SILO E-mail Account to Outlook

While Outlook Express is bundled with Windows XP, Microsoft Outlook is a separate product. It is usually included in the Microsoft Office Suite.

Initial Configuration

  1. Start Microsoft Outlook.
  2. From the Tools menu, select the E-mail Accounts... option.
  3. Select the Add a new e-mail account option.
  4. Click on the Next button.
  5. Select the IMAP option.
  6. Click on the Next button.
  7. In the Your name: field, enter your full name.
  8. In the E-Mail address: field, enter your full e-mail address, e.g. username@lsa.lib.ia.us
  9. In the Incoming mail server (IMAP): field, enter mail.lsa.lib.ia.us where lsa is the name of your library service area as it appears in your domain name.
  10. In the Outgoing mail server (SMTP): field, enter mail.lsa.lib.ia.us where lsa is the name of your library service area as it appears in your domain name.
  11. In the User Name: field, enter your full e-mail address, e.g. username@lsa.lib.ia.us
  12. In the Password: field, enter your password.
  13. If you would like Outlook to start without prompting for a password, check the Remember password checkbox.
  14. Click on the More Settings button.
  15. Select the Outgoing Server tab.
  16. Check the My Outgoing Server (SMTP) requires authentication checkbox.
  17. Verify that the Use same settings as my incoming mail server option is selected.
  18. Select the Advanced tab.
  19. In the Outgoing Server (SMTP): field, enter 587
  20. Click on the OK button.
  21. Click on the Next button.
  22. Click on the Finish button.

Additional Settings That Should Be Changed

  1. Pull-down the Tools menu and select the Options... option.
  2. Select the Mail Format tab.
  3. From the Compose in this format menu, select the Plain Text option.
  4. Verify that the Use Microsoft Word to edit e-mail messages option is unchecked.
  5. Verify that the Use Microsoft Word to read Rich Text e-mail messages option is unchecked.
  6. Click on the OK button.
