SILO Spam Detection

SILO has implemented the spam detection system integrated in the SurgeMail e-mail server. By comparing each incoming message to a set of rules, spam filtering determines the likelihood that a message is spam and moves it to your Spam folder.  The rules are updated regularly, so the software can match new types of spam circulating on the Internet.

SurgeMail's spam filtering is conservative, with the goal of not moving legitimate e-mail into your Spam folder.  Due to the conservative settings, not all spam may get moved.  This can be dealt with by simply deleting the spam out of your Inbox, or by using the Thunderbird e-mail client and training the junk filter.

Important Notes:

  • The spam filtering software never automatically deletes any messages.
  • Some unwanted messages will regularly get through the system with a low rating.  In most cases these messages simply do not have enough complete words to match a spam filtering rule.

SILO has instructions available for training the junk filter in Thunderbird. For more information or additional technical support, please contact the SILO Help Desk.
