How To: Configure Thunderbird for the First Time

Installing Thunderbird

  1. Download Thunderbird from http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/
  2. When prompted, save the file to your desktop.
  3. Double-click on the downloaded file to start the installation process.
  4. If a window pops up asking, "The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?", click the on the Run button.
  5. The setup window will open with "Welcome to Mozilla Thunderbird!"
  6. Click on the Next button.
  7. Select the I Accept the terms of the License Agreement option.
  8. Click on the Next button.
  9. Select the Standard option.
  10. Click on the Next button.
  11. The summary screen will display a list of items that will be installed.
  12. Click on the Next button.
  13. Verify that the checkbox Launch Mozilla Thunderbird now is checked.
  14. Click on the Finish button.

Configuring Thunderbird

  1. The Thunderbird Import Wizard will start automatically.
  2. Select the Don't import anything option.
  3. Click on the Next button.
  4. The Thunderbird Account Wizard will start automatically.
  5. Verify that the Email account option is selected.
  6. Click on the Next button.
  7. In the Your Name: field, enter your full name.
  8. In the Email Address: field, enter your email address, e.g. username@cityname.lib.ia.us
  9. Click on the Next button.
  10. Select the IMAP option.
  11. In the Incoming Server: field, enter mail.cityname.lib.ia.us where cityname is the name of your city as it appears in your domain name.
  12. In the Outgoing Server: field, enter mail.cityname.lib.ia.us where cityname is the name of your city as it appears in your domain name.
  13. Click on the Next button.
  14. In the Incoming User Name: field, enter your full e-mail address, e.g. username@cityname.lib.ia.us
  15. Click on the Next button.
  16. Verify that the Account Name: field contains your full e-mail address, e.g. username@cityname.lib.ia.us
  17. Click on the Next button.
  18. Click on the Finish button.
  19. If a window pops up asking, "Do you want to use Mozilla Thunderbird as the default mail application?", click on the Yes button.

Settings That Must Be Changed

  1. Right-click on your e-mail address in the left pane and select the Subscribe... option.
  2. Check the checkboxes next to Drafts, INBOX, Sent Items, Spam, and Trash.
  3. Click on the OK button.
  4. Pull-down the Tools menu and select the Account Settings option.
  5. In the left panel, click on the Composition & Addressing branch.
  6. Uncheck the Compose messages in HTML format checkbox.
  7. In the left panel, click on the Outgoing Server (SMTP) branch.
  8. Click on the (default) server.
  9. Click on the Edit button.
  10. In the Port: field, enter 587
  11. Click on the OK button.
  12. Click on the OK button.
