How To: Configure Thunderbird for the First Time
Installing Thunderbird
- Download Thunderbird from http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/
- When prompted, save the file to your desktop.
- Double-click on the downloaded file to start the installation process.
- If a window pops up asking, "The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?", click the on the Run button.
- The setup window will open with "Welcome to Mozilla Thunderbird!"
- Click on the Next button.
- Select the I Accept the terms of the License Agreement option.
- Click on the Next button.
- Select the Standard option.
- Click on the Next button.
- The summary screen will display a list of items that will be installed.
- Click on the Next button.
- Verify that the checkbox Launch Mozilla Thunderbird now is checked.
- Click on the Finish button.
Configuring Thunderbird

The Thunderbird Import Wizard will start automatically.
- Select the Don't import anything option.
- Click on the Next button.

The Thunderbird Account Wizard will start automatically.
- Verify that the Email account option is selected.
- Click on the Next button.
- In the Your Name: field, enter your full name.
- In the Email Address: field, enter your email address, e.g. username@cityname.lib.ia.us
- Click on the Next button.
- Select the IMAP option.
- In the Incoming Server: field, enter mail.cityname.lib.ia.us where cityname is the name of your city as it appears in your domain name.
- In the Outgoing Server: field, enter mail.cityname.lib.ia.us where cityname is the name of your city as it appears in your domain name.
- Click on the Next button.
- In the Incoming User Name: field, enter your full e-mail address, e.g. username@cityname.lib.ia.us
- Click on the Next button.
- Verify that the Account Name: field contains your full e-mail address, e.g. username@cityname.lib.ia.us
- Click on the Next button.
- Click on the Finish button.
- If a window pops up asking, "Do you want to use Mozilla Thunderbird as the default mail application?", click on the Yes button.
Settings That Must Be Changed

Right-click on your e-mail address in the left pane and select the
Subscribe... option.
- Check the checkboxes next to Drafts, INBOX, Sent Items, Spam, and Trash.
- Click on the OK button.

Pull-down the Tools menu and select the Account Settings option.
- In the left panel, click on the Composition & Addressing branch.
- Uncheck the Compose messages in HTML format checkbox.
- In the left panel, click on the Outgoing Server (SMTP) branch.
- Click on the (default) server.
- Click on the Edit button.

In the Port: field, enter 587
- Click on the OK button.
- Click on the OK button.
