How to Use the Kupu Editor

Plone uses Kupu, a browser-based HTML editor, to edit rich text fields.  The body text fields of events, news items, and pages support HTML formatted rich text.  Kupu includes a collection of tools that help you quickly add formatting to your text without having to know HTML. These tools work very much like most word processing programs.  The Kupu editor is supported in Firefox and Internet Explorer versions 5.5 and higher.

When entering formatted text with Kupu, it's often easier to write out all of the text first and then go back and apply the formatting.  This allows you to specify where formatting should begin and end at the same time.  It also requires fewer mouse clicks and less scrolling.

Toolbar Buttons

Font formatting buttons -
Apply font formatting to selected text. Each of these buttons toggles between applying a format and removing it. If you want to apply bolding to a word, highlight the word and then click the “B” button. If you have decided you want text that is currently bold to be changed back to non-bold text, simply highlight the text and then click the “B” button again. The formatting applied by each button, in order, is: bold, italic, subscript and superscript.
Paragraph justification buttons -
Apply left, center, or right-justification to the selected paragraph. Justification is always applied to the entire paragraph, even if you highlighted only a portion of a paragraph.
Numbered and Unordered list buttons -
Applies automatic numbering or bulleting and indents to create attractive and easily readable lists. You can either type your list first, with one list item per line, and then select the whole list and click the appropriate button, or you can click the button and begin typing. A new list item will be created every time you hit Enter. To stop auto-formatting when you reach the end of your list, hit Enter twice.
Definition list button -
Applies a special list format in which every other line is indented. This format is particularly useful for glossaries and other lists that have a heading or term followed by explanatory text.
Decrease and Increase quote level buttons -
Moves the selected paragraph one increment further to the left or right, respectively.
 Insert image button -
Opens the Insert Image drawer, which allows you to insert and position images in your page.
Insert internal link button -
Opens the Insert Link drawer, which allows you to create a link to other content items within your site.
Insert external link button -
Opens the External Link drawer, which allows you to add a link to an external Web page and preview the Web page.
Insert table button -
Opens the Insert Table drawer that allows you to specify the style, number of rows, and number of columns and then insert a table.
Remove image or Remove link button -
When you click on an image, internal link, or external link you have already inserted, the Remove icon will appear next to the Undo button.  When you remove an image, it is removed from the current page, but the image remains stored on your Plone site.  When you remove a link from a page, the text contained within the link remains.
Undo and Redo buttons -
Allows you to reverse your last action or, after having done that, to redo it.
Edit HTML code button -
Displays the content and formatting of the page in HTML. If you are an advanced HTML user, you can edit your page directly in HTML. To return to the default WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) view, click the button again.
Zoom -
Expands the Kupu editor to fill the current browser window.  This makes editing large documents easier, because there is only one scroll bar in the browser window, and it allows you to focus on a single field.

Toolbar Menus

Style Menu
Style menu - Provides a drop-down list of styles that you can apply at the paragraph level. To apply a style, highlight the text to be formatted, then click the down arrow in the style selector and choose the style to apply. Styles are always applied to the entire paragraph, even if you highlighted only a portion of a paragraph.  To remove a style, reapply the normal style to the paragraph.
Numbered List Menu
Number format menu - Provides a drop-down list of number formats that can be applied to a numbered list.  To apply a number format, place the cursor anywhere inside the numbered list, click the down arrow in the number format selector, and chose the format to apply.  Number formats are always applied to every entry in a numbered list.  To remove numbering from a list, highlight every entry in the list and click on the numbered list icon in the toolbar.
Unordered List Menu
Bullet format menu - Provides a drop-down list of bullet formats that can be applied to an unordered list.  To apply a bullet format, place the cursor anywhere inside the unordered list, click the down arrow in the bullet format selector, and chose the format to apply.  Bullet formats are always applied to every entry in an unordered list.  To remove bullets from a list, highlight every entry in the list and click on the unordered list icon in the toolbar.
