The Cost/Inflation of Books and Magazines

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Consumer Price Index for the unadjusted 12-month period ending May 2010, consumer prices - all items - rose 2.0%.  Library and book trade almanac 2010 (formerly The Bowker Annual)
  • From 2008 to 2009, periodical prices increased 6.4%.
  • Hardcover fiction titles fell 0.9% in 2009.
  • Mass market fiction increased 2.5% in 2009 while trade and other paperbacks decreased 3.125%.
  • For children’s and young adults books, hardcover prices (children’s fell 9.7% and YA fell 30.7%) in 2009;
  • Children and YA mass market paperbacks (children’s increased 2.7% and YA increased 7.75%) in 2009 while trade and other paperback children’s and YA titles (children’s rose 2.9% and YA rose 2.2%)  in 2009.

Audiobooks:

  • Children’s increased 16.3%; YA fell 2.9%; Overall audiobooks increased in price 8.9%
