Raising Readers Library Corner
Through a partnership with Iowa Public Television, the State Library has five Raising Readers Library Corners available for loan to public libraries.
Parents, caregivers, teachers, and kids can all use these resources. The corner is a small, colorful space where kids can feel free to play games on a computer, read a book, or watch an educational and interactive literacy skill-building DVD. And of course, characters from favorite books and PBS KIDS programs are part of the fun.
All activities – including self-directed worksheets, online videos, parent-led activities, and more – are based on an existing literacy framework that has its foundation in the National Reading Panel recommendations, encompassing skills such as letter recognition, print awareness, and vocabulary instruction.
The Raising Readers Library Corner consist of a 6 x 8 ft rug; 2 banners with cases – each banner is approximately 7 feet X 3.5 feet when open; two DVDs and 1 CD-ROM; activity booklets which are given away to kids. See a photo of a library corner from Mason City Public Library.
To borrow a corner, you will need to make arrangements with Rinda Kramme. She will work out a timeframe with you on how long you want to borrow the corner. Due to the size, each library will need to make arrangements to pick up their corner from the State Library and return it.
The initiative is part of Iowa Public Television’s participation in the PBS KIDS Raising Readers campaign. This national literacy effort focuses on building reading skills at home, at school, in child care centers, and in the community. Many thanks to Iowa Public Television.
