for Summer Library Program Workshops
The State Library of Iowa believes strongly in the importance of a Summer Reading program, and, with the public libraries around the State, promotes a vigorous Summer Reading program. Research shows that children who read six or more books during the summer maintain or improve their reading skills, while children who do not lose ground by September. The Summer Library Program encourages reading for pleasure, the development of positive attitudes about the public library, and provides constructive activities during the long break from school.
In the 4th edition of "In Service to Iowa: Public Library Measures of Quality" Standard 51 reads, "The library provides a summer reading program for children they serve, or cooperates with other libraries or agencies to provide the program. A library that participates in the State Library's Summer Library Program meets this measure. Children are defined as persons 14 years of age or younger." This is a required measure for Tier 1 of Enrich Iowa Direct State Aid funding.
The State Library's Summer Library Program is funded through the Federal Library Services and Technology Act.
