February 4, 2003

Mary Cameron called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. In attendance were: Mary Cameron, Judy Bar-Shimon, Ginny Cameron, Jerri Heid, Lisa Manley, Cheryl Haman, Joa LaVille, Kim Ball, Maria Levetzow, Terri Tesch, Karen Day, Sue Reiher, Linda Fox, Sue Teutsch, Jeaneal Weeks and Mary Siegner.

Absent Beth Marie Quanbeck, Marilyn Tilley, Liz Trippler, Barb Sowers, Elizabeth Huff, and Cathy Boggs.

Minutes from the November 5, 2002 meeting were approved.

2003 Children=s Summer Library Program - ALaugh It Up @ the Library@

Mary and Karen are working with the LSA=s on a bad weather policy for the SLP. Thank you to Karen, this year the Handouts will all be in an envelope! Yeah!

Jeaneal is getting nervous. She and Cathy have been meeting regularly and now are covering chapters 3-7. They are focusing on music. There are a lot of songs to introduce and teach and also lots of readers theater activities. They are hoping to have a lot of volunteer’s help at the workshops. Panel discussions at the workshops will focus on bookkeeping ideas, how to get all library staff involved in SLP, and how libraries Awrap up@ their summer library programs. Representatives on the panel will be from all size libraries. Cathy and Jeanneal are also working on a web site hand out. Karen Day is putting together an Ahow-to@ hand out to go with the CD clip art for Word and Word Perfect. There will also be a Laptop at each SLP so librarians will be able to look at the CD and have a hands-45on experience.

SLP registrations to date: 30 Elliott; 48 Urbandale; 45 Ames; 58 Coralville; 25 Mt. Pleasant; 23 Arthur; 61 Everly; 70 Mason City; 30 Ft. Dodge; and 45 Fayette.

Thanks to Joa who helped with a Spanish Bibliography for Laugh It Up @ Your Library.

Jeaneal wanted to thank everyone for sending in crafts and a special thanks to Terri Tesch who had to send them twice.

Karen said incentives should arrive by the end of February or first of March.

Words of wisdom from past SLP Presenters:

Jerri, Mary S, and Terri - Relax, have fun and enjoy meeting librarians throughout the state.

Maria is going over the artwork her Teen Advisory Group has painted. She will discuss how to adapt the material to your library large or small. 1st chapter success stories - took tips from Patrick Jones - surveyed teens who have been in previous YA programs.

So far 118 have registered for the YA SLP. A flyer will be distributed at each SLP workshop so expect more to register. A packet will be sent to a site host for each ICN site.

2004 Summer Library Program ADiscovery New Trails @ The Library@

Mary has received two chapters from the Co-op. Jerri has completed the YA chapter for the CSLP manual. The presenters for 2004 will join us at the May 6th meeting. Themes for 2004 - Wilderness/Survival - ISU has a website of recipes with bugs. Interpaths to Interpeace - Self-Exploration - Meditation, Hiking/Biking & Trail Riding, and Discovery / Exploration.

Kids First 2003 - April 24 and April 25, 2003Mary sent 28 letters for Program Provider Sessions and received 14 positive responses. She still has three session’s spots to fill on Friday, but the Thursday schedule is full. Speaker’s information packets will be sent out March 1, 2003. Every library will receive a registration flyer the week of March 1. Round tables have already received the flyer.

CYP Update - Judy turned in ideas to ILA for the conference. Jerri worked on the first newsletter.

Meeting Dates - Next meeting will be May 6, 2003. Mary would like to have a face-to face meeting at the State Library with no agenda just concepts, ideas, and things to add and change. The majority liked Tuesday September 30, 2003. Will discuss further at next meeting. Westgate will be held April 15, 2004 from 10-3 at the Stoney Creek Inn. John Scieska declined an invitation to speak. Mary will keep looking for more ideas. April 28 & 29 is the Annual Cooperative SLP meeting. Mary Cameron and Karen Day will be attending. Go Around

Maria is working on SLP. Jim Trelease will be there in April. Will post dates on the YS-Talk mail list. Hope everyone will try to come. Cheryl said her library has been quiet. Working on Valentines Day project. She has contacted the ISU Extension for some programs. Sue has contacted Iowa State and they will be bringing out their Bug Zoo to her library. No new Director yet. Mary Siegner still has regular story times for preschoolers once a month she is having after school special activities. One month she has a program for grades K-2, and then the next month for grades 3-5. The school is providing transportation. They made pudding in a bag. The kids thought it was fun to throw the pudding bags around. Judy Bar-Shimon is having a big Valentines Day Tea. It is a big affair for the library. She is doing her usual story times. Ginny is waiting for a new library. She has a young man that comes into the library and puts on a puppet show. Libraries near Grinnell could use him also. Kim getting ready for Kids First. Jeaneal is working on SLP workshop. Her library is going through some growing pains and the director is retiring. Joa=s 6th & 8th Graders are coming once a month. She is having a Conversation Café for teens, mostly for age 16 and older. Karen will be going to Yacama, WA to do a presentation for the WLA about possibly joining CSLP. Linda will be receiving a new security system at the library and she received a grant from Wal-Mart. She is going to Legislative Day in Des Moines and encouraged other youth services librarians to attend also. She is having a program for Black History month. Terri is having a Singing Bug program and is hoping for a large crowd. During the month of February, the library will Kiss Over Dues Goodbye. Sue will be having a book sale and promotion called Sundaes on Sunday for persons interested in joining the Friends of the Library group. The Friends group pays for the busses to bring the elementary classes to the library. Jerri finished the 2004 SLP YA chapter last week. She will be having Valentines Day programs. She is also hosting a cookie decorating with grandparent program. Mary C is working on the SLP and there is never enough time. Patrick Jones contacted Mary about coming to Iowa to do some YA collection development workshops.
