2003 Summer Library Workshop
There was a great response. Attendance was up almost by 60 from 2002. If the weather was not a factor it probably would have been better. Mary was very pleased with the attendance.
Jeaneal’s thoughts: Hardest work she has done in a long time, but worth it! She said they followed the manual and then added to it. She really enjoyed working with Cathy and forgot that they weren’t going on the road together. When it came time to go do the workshop. They had worked so closely together. They worked every week getting the program together. It was a great sense of accomplishment. Everything we did seemed to be helpful to someone on the evaluations.
Highlights of Evaluations:
People appreciate seeing crafts.
People enjoy tying music into SRP
Positive comments about the presenters
Would like future programs to be about bugs
People enjoy the group participation
2003 YA SLP Workshop
There were 198 in attendance at the workshop. Great response to this workshop.
Evaluation Highlights:
We have never had a YA summer program, so everything was very helpful.
Ideas/Information that I can use
Great presentation, fun and easy to follow
Convenience of workshop/Liked having it over the ICN.
Grossology books/section
Teen advisory board and activities
Book review binder or rolodex
Hope we continue to have this next year and every year.
2004 SLP Update
There seems to be several conflicts for dates for the 2004 SLP workshops in February. February 14th, Valentines Day, many libraries have programs that day and February 16th is Presidents’ day and many libraries are closed. Mary said to e-mail her with dates that will and will not work and hopefully she can come up with a schedule.
CSLP Manual is completed. Karen said to expect the final copy around the first part of September. There will be a CD again with the following additions to the CD; colored poster, calendar, section of the manual in PDF format, some in Spanish format, press release and they will be giving you access to the font so you can customize the information to your library. Mark Buehmer will be doing the artwork.
The Iowa YA Manual is in the rough, rough draft stages and the final product will be completed around the first part of September as well. There will be another ICN YA SLP workshop in 2004.
Cooperative Summer Library Program Report
The theme for the 2005 SLP is: Imagine Dragons, Dreams and Daring Deeds
The chapters are:
Life in the Middle Ages
Medieval Fairs and Feasts
Fairy Tales, Legends and Folk Tales
Dragons and Mythical Beasts
Daring Deeds
Fantasy/Dream
CSLP will have a YA manual for 2005. The 2006 theme will be Pets. We couldn’t get a "Bugs" theme quite yet.
Kids First Conference
Mary said that attendance was down 1 person from 2002. The Evaluations are not completed yet. When they are finished they will be sent out. They should be completed the first part of next week.
Comments from everyone about the Conference:
Claudia was wonderful! It is a wonderful conference. Liked the food. The facility worked well. It was great to have the handouts even though we were not able to get to all the breakout sessions. Handouts were a great idea. Would like to have the schedules for both days ahead of time so we could decide what session we would like to attend. Would have liked Walter Minkel to speak in the morning.
Preview Westgate Lecture
Mary said she is worried about the economy and might consider brining in a national speaker so she can open up the lecture to others interested in children. She could then invite Community Colleges, Day Cares, Pre-Schools, Early Child Educators and so on. Mary said this would also give us the chance to network and really utilize each other’s resources.
The new location for the Westgate Lecture is at the Stoney Creek Inn – 5291 NW 84th Street, Johnston, Iowa 50131. The lecture will be held from 10-3 with lunch.
CYP Update
Judy Bar-Shimon resigned as Chairman. The new Chairman is Linda Fox and Jerri
Heid is the new Vice Chair. They are still looking for someone to work on the
CYP newsletter. Linda reported they are working on revitalizing the awards
program. They are also working on setting goals and asking LSA members to help
with this.
