Minutes

Minutes from the November 4, 2003 meeting were approved with no changes.

2004 CSLP Summer Library Program – Discover New Trails @ Your Library

Cathy Shaw talked about the 2004 program and enjoyed the opportunity to present the workshop all across Iowa .  She thinks February is a good month, but noted that 12-1 seemed to be a hard hour and many attendees were ready to be done.  Mary sent out the workshop evaluations and other comments about the workshops were:  the use of supplemental bibliographies for books that aren’t available by the time the manual is used, not enough books on display, attendees would like an actual programmed planned and presented, loved activities, good ideas, presenters were excellent, and more crafts on display.  The Council also looked at the statistics of attendance over the last three years.  CSLP has made a 30 second PSA which is being distributed to TV and radio stations all over Iowa .

Mary mentioned that the Marshalltown site was recorded and those videos are being checked out from the State Library.

2004 YA Summer Library Program

ICN problems really caused havoc with this workshop.  Sites all didn’t come up at the same time.  We did have 157 people registered to attend the workshop.  Maria did a great job and Mary applauded Maria for making a tape that the State Library could check out rather than trying to reschedule the workshop.  The tape has been used extensively.  Comments about the workshop included:  we need to keep doing a YA workshop for summer library program.

2005 CSLP Summer Library Program – Dragons, Dreams and Daring Deeds

The manual is done and final items are being added to it.  The YA theme for 2005 will be Joust Read.  Karen Day showed the art work for both the children’s and the YA program.  (Steven Kellogg did the art work for the children’s theme.) She also shared some of the incentives with the group.  We are going to have a booth at ILA again promoting the theme.  Mary and Karen are working on costumes and door prizes.

Westgate Lecture

The Building Blocks (Westgate Lecture) was well attended with 281 people on Wednesday and 243 people on Thursday.  Mary explained that this a different type of Westgate than in the past due to Heartland no longer providing the Author’s Conference and funding levels in Iowa ’s libraries.  It was a good opportunity for librarians to be a part of a group of people that also work with early childhood, but we wouldn’t want to do this format every year.  Youth Services Librarians may be taking on more of a teaching role with the lack of school librarians in schools.

Kids First Conference

Kids First has been scheduled for April 28 and 29, 2005 at the Four Points Sheraton on Merle Hay Road .  After contacting many speakers, Mary has booked Gene del Vecchio (Making the Library a Cool Place for Kids)  to be the keynote speaker on Thursday.  He will speak all Thursday morning.  Mary is still working on other details such as breakout sessions, a schedule, and speakers for Friday.  Mary asked for input from council members about how full a schedule they want for the two days.  An opportunity for networking is important too.  Mary will email everyone for more input and she needs ideas for breakout sessions.

CYP

Jerri Heid reported on the breakouts that CYP is sponsoring at ILA.  They are Sue Unger from  M.S. Creations as preconference on Wednesday, Joane Schroeder of Adventureland Puppets as a concurrent session at 11:30 on Friday and Jim Trelease on Thursday in the afternoon.  Jim Trelease will also be signing books at the SLP Booth.

Other

Brenda Knox reported that for National Library Week they did paper marbling.  She brought in old books to show the children how the paper looked.

Sue Reiher reported that in Waverly they are having an author in to do readings and sign books.

Barb Sowers reported that they kick-off their summer reading program in the schools with a program provider.  That make the kids excited and also guarantees good attendance at a provider program that they pay a lot of money for.

Carol Rosenbaum reported that for National Library Week they did a skit called “Librarians from the Black Lagoon.”  They had a laminated foot bookmark.

Nancy Pudenz reported that they had Fax Gilbert for National Library Week and this Thursday their Friends group will have a geranium sale.

Cathy Shaw reported that the Clayton County Librarians are again going to do programs at each others libraries and the program will be “Reading Rodeo.”

Deb Tobias gave us an update of the Book Talks that are always done on the ICN in February.  Deb also reminded everyone to participate in the CE survey that is being done this week.

Pat Engeman reported that they made May baskets for National Library Week. They are also going to do more school age crafts because the children really loved doing the May baskets.  Pat also reported about all the Lewis and Clark events that are happening in Iowa .

Linda Fox’s library is doing “Hollywood Cowboys” at their library all week.  For summer they are doing “Follow the Yellow Book Road .”

Jerri Heid reported that she is busy doing school visits and doing another of her “date” events – “A Date With Grandpa and Grandma.”

Joa LaVille reported that they celebrated Dia de los Niños/Dia de los Libros (The day of the child/the day of the book)...a Latin American Holiday that has come to the United States. Friday, April 30th...They celebrated with 350 people, games, activities, Mexican loteria (like picture bingo), and Hispanic Folk Dancing...every child got a free book and we served hot dogs for a light supper. They signed up 58 library cards in less than 3 hours, many to non-English speakers (we had volunteer bilingual teachers helping.)

Karen Day reported that North Central LSA is going to have Susan Pagnucci come and do a workshop in July.  Susan will also be doing programs in the area.

Beth Marie thanked Mary Cameron and the workshops presenters for their hard work.

Future Meeting Dates

Tentative meeting dates were on the agenda, but Mary is going to email everyone for more input on the best times to meet.

Mary thanked everyone for attending.
