2005 CSLP Summer Library Program – Dragons, Dreams and Daring Deeds
The manual is done and at the printers. We hope to have everything mailed by November 1. The free resource is on school age programming and is being written by Tami Chumbley. Steven Kellogg did the art work for the Dragons theme and the poster was shown at the meeting in May. Karen shared with the group that the incentive form is getting bigger each year with items for all age levels. We are going to have a booth at ILA again promoting the theme and Mary will send out an email asking for volunteers. Mary and Karen are working on costumes and door prizes. Linda Fox and Marilyn Tilley are the presenters for the 2005 workshops and have met once and are getting ready to go. Eileen Redinger from the Lake Mills Library will be doing the crafts this year. Karen is in the process of scheduling the workshops and locations and will have this done by ILA. Workshops will only be three hours this year. Sally Van Dorin will be doing a special Planning and Promoting Your Summer Library Program on the ICN on March 17, 2005 from 9:30-11:30 a.m.
2005 CSLP YA Summer Library Program - Joust Read.
This manual is done and also at the printers. Maria wrote the manual for the Collaborative this year, so Iowa will not be doing its own YA manual. Doug Keith did the art work for the poster. Maria will be doing a workshop promoting the YA summer program on March 10, 2005 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Maria gave a great suggestion for the Collaborative to ask teens about the theme before they pick the theme. Mary said she would pass this on to the YA Manual Committee at CSLP.
2006 CSLP Summer Program
Mary gave a brief update on the process for the 2006 program. The traditional manual theme will be “Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales” with David Shannon doing the artwork. The theme for the YA manual will be “Creature Features” with Russell Walks doing the art work. The author/editor for the traditional manual will be asking for submissions soon. Elaine Reitz from the North Liberty Community Library is one of the presenters for the SLP workshops and we are looking for another.
Standards Update
Two new standards have been added to the “In Service to Iowa ; Public Library Measures of Quality,” fourth edition. At Tier 1, standard 51, “The library provides a summer reading program for children they serve, or cooperates with other libraries or agencies to provide the program. A library that participates in the State Library’s Summer Library Program meets this measure. Children are defined as persons 14 years of age or younger.” The other standard, which is an optional standard, standard 52, “The library offers outreach services to day care centers and other entities in which groups of preschool children gather. Daycares may include commercial or in home, preschools, and/or Headstart. Outreach services include collections and programming.” Both of these standards were endorsed by the YSAC last September at our retreat at the State Library.
Kids First Conference
Kids First has been scheduled for April 28 and 29, 2005 at the Four Points Sheraton on Merle Hay Road . Gene del Vecchio (Making the Library a Cool Place for Kids) will be the keynote speaker on Thursday. He will speak all Thursday morning. Mary is still working on other details such as breakout sessions, a schedule, and a Friday keynoe speaker. An opportunity for networking is important too. Mary will email everyone for more input and she needs ideas for breakout sessions. We are having a contest for themes. Send your ideas to Mary and then we will all vote.
Reading Achievers
Reading Achievers is the No Child Left Behind summer reading initiative. It was piloted in 12 cities and one state this summer with a planned roll-out to the rest of the states next summer. Mary has met with Jim Reese, Bureau Chief at the Iowa Department of Education, to talk about ways public libraries and the schools can cooperate on promoting reading during the summer. When Mary hears more from Jim Reese, she will let everyone know.
