2005 Dragons, Dreams and Daring Deeds

The workshops presenters are ready to go and all the boxes are packed for the road trip that starts next week. Mary has counted 28 boxes at the State Library alone without handouts and door prizes.  Karen Day hopes the copy machine in her office doesn’t break down.  Marilyn Tilley reports that there is just so much material to present.  Everyone is excited and ready to go.  Past workshop presents on the YSAC wished everyone a good time.  Workshop numbers so far are:  Algona 40, Anamosa 53, Calmar 40, Cherokee 61, Churdan 26, Elliott 46, Grundy Center 45, Johnston AM 43, Johnston PM 51, Mason City 56 and Ottumwa 26. Eileen Redinger has made over 105 crafts for the workshop.

Sally Van Dorin reported on her Planning and Promoting Your Summer Library Program ICN session that she is doing March 17.  There are 60 participants registered.  If anyone has any suggestions, please let her know.  She wants to present a wide variety of information for all sizes of libraries with all types of budgets.  We will be taping this session

Deb Tobias asked the group for ideas for librarians that are staffing one-person libraries.  The group gave her many ideas.

2005 Joust Read

On Thursday, March 10, from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Maria will present the 2005 YA Workshop over the ICN.    Registration is at 90 participants.  Maria said this is a great theme and she has lots of ideas to share.  She also thinks that the theme is really going to be fun.  We will be taping this session.

2006 Reading Program

Mary Cameron is the Manual Chair for CSLP this year and said that four chapters are done.  The 2005 Collaborative website is not up and running right now.  They are in the process of updating and it will be back up in March.  Maria reported that the YA manual is done and she has seen the rough draft.  Karen Day shared a rough sketch of the poster being done by David Shannon. Maria also reported on the YA artwork that she has seen.  Karen asked for ideas for incentives for the Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales and Creature Features theme.

Kids First 2005

Kid First will be held Thursday & Friday April 28 & 29, 2005 at Four Points Sheraton on Merle Hay Road .  The theme is “Chillin’ @ The Library”  Registration is available on the Kid First website on the State Library page, but will also be distributed at summer workshops.

Keynote speakers will be Gene Del Vecchio, “Making the Library a Cool Place for Kids” on Thursday morning and the Friday keynote speakers are Jean Gullikson and Debi Stephenson from the Dubuque-Carnegie Stout Library.  They will be speaking on “Extreme Makeover @Your Library; Wild and Eye-catching Promotionals.”  These two keynotes will complement each other very well.

The schedule will be a little longer on both days to accommodate both keynotes.  Registrations costs are the same as in 2001 and 2003.  All breakouts are filled except for one YA session.  There won’t be an activity on Thursday night.

Mary promises that it will be a busy two days with full schedules.

CYP Update

Jerri Heid gave an update from CYP.  CYP had a goal setting session in January and some of the goals were: more use of ys_talk, change name of CYP, reinforce that CYP is for all types of youth services librarians, host events at ILA, have a spring meeting at Kids First, and many more.  It was a good group with a mix of veteran and new youth services librarians.

The next meeting date for May 5, 2005 was scheduled for 11:30-1:00 p.m.
