Mary also acknowledged Linda Fox, Marilyn Tilley, Ginny Cameron and Cheryl Haman whose terms have expired on the YSAC. Mary also acknowledged new members Linda Parker, Elaine Reitz, Katie Dreyer, Loretta Brickley, Bev Runyon, and Eileen Redinger.
Comments about the 2005 Children’s Summer Library Program were requested, Linda Fox shared that the sound system worked great and helped her voice, Eileen’s crafts were great and it was wonderful to go on the road with Mary and Karen Day. Marilyn Tilley echoed the comments that Linda made and added that setting up the materials for the workshops by chapter really help when setting up and taking down the workshop each day. Beth Marie, appreciated and thanked everyone for all the hard work and good presentations. Mary will send out the written comments from the workshop at a later time. Evaluations showed that the 9:00-12:00 time frame was very well-received.
Sally Van Dorin reviewed her workshop “Planning and Promoting Your Summer Library Program” that was March 17 on the ICN. Attendance for this workshop was 154. Mary asked the council for input on this question: “Should this workshop be done every year? YSAC members gave a variety of feedback. Mary will email the question out to all members and review responses as well as evaluations from the workshop.
The YA summer library program workshop was held March 10 with 162 librarians attending. Mary will email the evaluations from this workshop to YSAC members. Maria thought the session was very well received.
The manuals for the 2006 summer reading program are completed. Linda Parker and Elaine Reitz will be the workshop presenters and will begin meeting to plan the workshops in late August. We will be doing an ILA booth again, so if any members have ideas for the booth, contact Mary. Mary showed the artwork for both the children’s and teen theme. Karen Day asked for any incentive ideas anyone might have for the 2006 reading themes.
Mary and Karen Day gave an update on the Collaborative Summer Library Program annual meeting. There are 32 member states in the collaborative. Specific themes for 2007 were chosen at the meeting. “Get a Clue @ Your Library will be the children’s theme and YKN – “You Never Know” will be the teen theme. Mary was happy to report that the general theme for 2008 will be “Bugs.” Karen Day reminded members that she still does have some PSA’s available for this year.
Mary asked for feedback about Kids First. Only about 32 evaluations are in so far. About 194 librarians attended the conference this year up about 25 from 2003. Comments about the conference included that the keynote speakers were great and participants love getting all the handouts in a packet. Mary is going to email the council for input about repeating sessions in 2007 or adding more teen sessions.
No definite plans have been made for Westgate in 2006. In 2004, the State Library, IPTV and DE collaborated for an early childhood program called “Building Blocks to Early Literacy.” Mary has been approached by the Des Moines Public Library, Drake, Iowa Center for the Book, Des Moines Public Schools , and Heartland AEA about partnering for a future event. Mary is going to email everyone for responses about this collaboration. Does the YSAC want Kids First to stay the same? Can we just partner in even numbered years? Mary has another meeting with this group on May 19.
CYP Update: Jim Gill will provide two breakout sessions on Thursday and will sell his CDs. On Friday, there will be a session about graphic novels, manga and anime.
Mary posed the question of the Youth Services Advisory Council May meeting date be moved or not held because of poor attendance. She knows this is a busy time of the year for everyone and just wanted to know how they felt about a change. Mary is going to email YSAC members about input on this idea.
Mary reminded the Council of the new meeting dates and asked if there were any more comments. Mary thanked the Council for all their input that they give throughout the year and attending meetings four times a year with their busy schedules. The meeting was adjourned at 12:50 p.m.
