Cameron and Day stated that the deadline for the first order of incentives to be received by March 1 is November 21. January 21 is the second date, with arrival on April 1. Cameron reported that the Kim Bolan workshop gave several good ideas for incentives for teens.
Day will be sending a mailing that will include: Creative Crafts for Critters, permission to use Wee Willy song, YA flyer, revised children’s flyer (with a location change), recipes for Puppy Chow and Monster Mash, and winter weather policy with 1-800 number. Cameron elaborated on the location change in Iowa City. This location will now be the Community room in North Liberty. There will be one more location change in Paullina and will be announced when final arrangements for a building are made. Cameron thanked Tesch for helping with these arrangements.
Cameron reported 70 registrations for Summer Reading Workshops have been received already. The registrants for Iowa City will receive a notice of the change in location. Brickley had a suggestion that everyone bring a digital camera to take pictures of the crafts. Cameron will put the suggestion on the website for Summer Workshops. Parker and Reitz reported on progress with the presentations. They are going to emphasize upper elementary projects and storytimes for older children. Suggestions from the group include: getting the project done before the holidays, have fun with it, ask others to help, enjoy the experience, relax. Tesch assured the group the crafts will be done by end of December. Day reminded them that handouts need to be done by January.
Cameron reported that the Planning and Promotion ICN session has been put on hold. She would like more time to think about what to do with this.
Cameron reported the ILA booth was a success again this year. Participants could register for prizes Day then sent the winners their prizes. Discussion followed with these comments about the booth: it’s a good way to network, it helps staff get fired up, happy the manual came out prior to ILA conference, great for sharing ideas.
Cameron asked the committee to give their comments on her idea to do three regional summer workshops for YA. Comments were: kick it up a notch, use some of the ideas from the Kim Bolan workshops. Cameron would like the Committee to e-mail any other suggestions to her.
Levetzow reported that the clip art provided was not user friendly. Cameron asked her to e-mail the suggestion to her so she can take it to CSLP Annual Meeting, Submissions for manual ideas are due December 1. Russell Walks will be doing the artwork instead of Brett Helquist for the YA manual. Suggestions for future artwork: secondary languages, different fonts. Cameron will get the information about the suggestions on the State Library website.
Cameron asked for suggestions on the Westgate/Kids First Conferences. She asked if she should have a Westgate endowed speaker at Kids 1st 2007 or get authors to do some sessions. Consensus of the Committee is they like the breakout sessions but would like to have the authors also. One suggestion that was popular would be to have the Keynote speak on Thursday at the banquet.
Cameron reported Jim Gills sessions at ILA were great, she would like to have him go around the state and do workshops something like the Kitson workshops. Several of the Committee members liked his sessions and would endorse her having him do the workshops. ILA will be in Council Bluffs next year.
