2006 Children’s Summer Library Program Summary—“Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales”
Comments by Linda Parker and Elaine Reitz.
Linda felt the workshops were well worth the time. It was a great learning experience, fun to interact with the librarians, a wonderful experience to travel Iowa and a great way to expand her horizons. A lot of credit was given to Cameron and previous presenters in paving the way for them, having set-up routine and giving suggestions on travel, packing, etc. Also, mentioned was that it is also a big plus when the presenters live close to each other and can work on their presentations together. It was agreed that the three hour time allotment of the workshop is appropriate will not be changed
Evaluations:
Cameron asked if anyone noticed repeated comments on the evaluations (other than food, room related). Comments included:
Many really like having the crafts displayed and maybe more crafts.
Having books from the State Library for display and to check out.
Reidinger mentioned maybe including snack ideas to go along with the theme.
Carol R. asked about including an updated bibliography in addition to the one that is in the manual which the presenters already include.
Many feel there needs to be more ideas for the “tweens”, upper elementary-3rd grade and older. Mary mentioned that this was a big topic at the CSLP annual meeting. Linda mentioned that she has found that lacking in previous manual and that she and Elaine tried to add additional ideas.
Follow-up:
Attendance for the workshops was up slightly this year. This was the first year using the automated registration system in which 552 registered, but 510 actually coming to the workshops. There 90 no-shows and 50 walk-ins. Cameron indicated that less food will be ordered next year.
2006 YA Summer Library Program Summary-“Creature Feature”
Presenter Comments by Maria
Maria said that she really liked doing the YA workshops “face to face” versus over the ICN. She said that it did take a little more preparation on her part, but having the interaction from those attending makes it more worthwhile and feels they get more out of the workshop. The three workshops were very well attended with registrations only down 30 from the previous year when they were held over the ICN. The 2007 YA workshops will also be “ face to face.”
2007 Get a Clue @ the Library
Katie Dryer and Kathy Rogers will be co-presenters for the 2007 SLP workshops. Karen Day reported that there are final edits to be made to the 2007 manual and then it will be ready to go the printer. Mary Cameron said that the artwork in the manual is outstanding. The incentives are still being decided, probably usual spy items: yellow tape, glasses, hat, etc. We will have a book at ILA again in the fall to promote the summer program.
2007 YNK @ the Library
Karen Day mentioned there was no news about the YA manual since the corrections were made. In addition, incentive ideas need to be decided. Comments from the CSLP annual meeting including having more for the YA program – more art work, more incentives, and a separate CD ROM. The art work for 2007 has not been approved yet, so Cameron has not seen it. Mary also mentioned that Highsmith was asked to provide a YA banner similar to the one they have for the children’s program.
Update from Collaborative Summer Library Program Annual Meeting
2008 and 2009 Themes
Cameron reported on attending the Collaborative meeting that was held in Princeton, New Jersey in April. Others attending: Karen Day, Barb Shultz from North Central LSA, which is also the Administrative Services Agency for CSLP, Jerri Heid, and Tami Chumbley Finley.
There are now 41 states in the collaborative for 2007, with some of the final nine showing interest in joining. Attended many of the subcommittee meetings and Iowa had good representation at all of them. It was a full 6 days of discussions, ideas for manuals, themes, etc. All agreed that by working together the states have been able to produce high quality manuals, with noted illustrators, something that could not have been accomplished otherwise.
2008 and 2009 Themes
The themes for SLP 2008 will be “Catch the Reading Bug” and the YA theme will “Metamorphosis@ Your Library”
For 2009 the general theme will “Fine Arts” which will include, music, art, or movie themes.
Congratulations to Mary Cameron as she will be the 2007 Chair- Elect for the Collaborative, 2008 Chair, and 2009 Past Chair. Cameron has done an excellent job in representing Iowa and youth services.
