The Youth Services Advisory Committee met via conference call on Thursday, November 2, 2006 at 11:30 am. Mary Cameron conducted introductions as each person connected to the conference call. She went over conference call etiquette/procedures.
Minutes from the September 27, 2006 meeting were accepted as written.
2007 Reading Program Update: The manuals have been sent out. Each packet came with a children’s manual, teen manual and two CD ROMS. The two CDs are identical and one is intended for the children’s manual coordinator and the other for the teen manual coordinator. Eventually, there will be a separate mailing to the teen coordinators.
There are many incentives this year. Mary discussed the sliding scale that Highsmith offers for incentive orders. The first deadline is December 1. If you get your order in by December 1, you should receive your incentives by March 1, 2007. Barb thought the artwork was excellent. Eileen mentioned that she would like to see teen T-shirts at the ILA booth next year and Mary responded that CSLP is negotiating with Highsmith to make sure that is part of the promotional packet. They did include a teen banner this year.
Mary Cameron asked if the ILA booth should be done again next year; Katie, Nancy and Jerri all thought it is worth keeping. Mary Cameron asked for costume ideas for next year, Beth Marie suggested safari with a bug catcher, Loretta suggested butterfly wings. Mary asked the group to e-mail suggestions to her. Overall, the summer library booth at ILA seems to be very popular with attendees. More summer library information was given out this year than ever before.
Mary said that SLP workshop fliers distributed had an error. The Paullina and Churdan dates were mixed up. The correct dates are in the CE Catalog on the State Library’s Web site. Mary has sent out emails with the correction on IOWALIB and ys_talk.
Katie and Kathy have met several times to work on the presentation for the children’s workshop. They are trying to include family programs in all chapters. Some suggestions from the YSAC group included: talking to the extension office about a criminal investigation program they have available, more time for discussion of crafts, and using law enforcement people for programming.
YA Workshop - Carmen is working on the outline and is including a CSI and a lie detector component along with lots of crafts. She also announced she is leaving Indianola and going to Urbandale to be the teen librarian. Carmen is also working on bookmarks, calendars, etc. in Microsoft Word that can be e-mailed to everyone or put on the State Library Web site for librarians to use. She asked if anyone had a key for text messaging and Angie will e-mail one to Mary Cameron. Jerri suggested “Science Detectives: How scientists solved six real-life mysteries” by the editors of YES Magazine, a Junior Library Guild book for grades 3-5. Katie suggested Clue on DVD. Mary Cameron suggested they push for board games. Katie said Algona had a board game night and it was very successful.
2008 Reading Program Update: Mary Cameron told the group that if they have ideas for the 2008 reading program, to submit them to the author/editor of the manual. Children’s manual ideas are due on December 15 and teen manual ideas are due December 30.
Kids First Update: There are still openings for breakout sessions. Mary asked that if you have ideas, or would be interested in doing a session, to e-mail her. Keynote speakers are Steven Layne and RoseMary Honnald, and authors Nancy Carlson and Deb Caletti. The conference is April 25-27, 2007 at the Gateway Hotel in Ames.
YSS Update: Carrie is unable to attend today. Chair-elect of YSS, Katie Dreyer, updated the group on the sessions that YSS sponsored at ILA in October and also shared with the group a possible session for ILA in October, 2007. YSS plans on having a goal setting meeting again in January this year.
Meeting Dates: Mary asked if the conference call was something that we should continue and several participants said yes. So the next meeting will also be a conference call.
