3. 2007 Summer Library Program Update

Children's SLP Workshops.
Katie Dreyer and Kathy Rogers were the presenters.  Mary asked them for comments.

Katie remarked that the weather was bad and she is glad the workshops are over.  She thought the workshops were a great experience.  Katie's recommendation to future presenters was that they should be very organized.

Kathy loved the workshop experience.  She thought the workshops were a lot of work, but still fun. She thought the attendance was great even though the workshops were plagued with bad weather. Her recommendation to future presenters was to be excited about the topic and have help for the crafts.

Mary Cameron reported that the number of attendees last year was 514 and this year was 455.  She feels that with all the rescheduling and not being able to present all the workshops that the numbers were good and probably would have exceeded last year’s numbers if weather permitted.  She thanked Katie and Kathy for their work.

Teen Workshops
Carmen Epstein presented the teen workshops

Carmen thought the workshops were a great learning experience and she received a lot of good input from attendees.  She felt it is always good to hear what others are doing around the state to promote the program.  She recommends starting early to plan on presenter and be organized. Carmen also suggested keeping a file of ideas/projects you want to use.

4.  2008 Summer Library Program Update

Themes
Youth – Catch the Reading Bug
Teen – Metamorphosis @ Your Library

Art Work
Youth – Harry Bliss
Teen - Jan Duursema

Mary reported that she has seen the artwork for “Metamorphosis” and will forward the program to the committee.  Courtney thought the theme would be fun for teens.  Jean felt the youth theme is good for both boys and girls.  Debb Green asked if the Insect Zoo is being continued.  Phyllis had them last year and thought it was great.  Mary reported that funding is in jeopardy and they are asking for letters of support.  Mary will call the Insect Zoo and find out their status.

Mary reminded members that once again we will be having an ILA booth at the fall conference.  She will send out an email with dates and times for staffing the booth closer to the conference.

Jean Gullikson, the presenter for the children's summer reading workshops, asked for ideas for the "bug" theme.

5.  CSLP Program Updates

Mary reported on the CSLP annual meeting which was in April.  The children's theme for 2009 is "Get Creative @ Your Library." Mary reported that she is aware that many people don’t like the “@ Your Library” part of the theme, but it is very important to add that phrase if the theme itself doesn't readily identify the program as a reading or library program. Mary reported that the theme for 2009 will give libraries a variety options to use for programs.

The teen theme for 2009 is "Express Yourself @ Your Library."

Sonia Ernst and Becky Bilby attended the CSLP Annual Meeting. Sonia reported from the meeting that the Fine Arts theme has a wide variety of uses.   Libraries could go with fine arts, poetry, music, or drama.  She also didn’t realize that Highsmith gave back to the program.  Sonia recommends that we should promote the use of Highsmith products because they give so much back to the libraries.  Mary said that dues to CSLP don’t pay for a lot of the resources that we get for the summer library program such as the sample t-shirts, posters, public service announcements etc. and that the money from Highsmith is used for these things.

The 2010 general theme was chosen at the annual meeting: It will be "Water."

Mary reported that the vote for this theme was overwhelming and there are lots of ideas on its use.  Sonia wanted to thank Mary for asking her and Becky to attend.

6.  "Kids First" Review– April 25, 26, and 27, 2007

Mary reported that the evaluations are not finished.  She wanted to get input on the three questions she asked YSAC members to think about during the conference.

Debb Green asked how many people attended the pre-conference. Mary reported that 103 librarians attended.  Katie Dreyer thought the session was great and well worth it.  She got good ideas and thinks we should continue to have a pre-conference. She did not have a problem being gone for three days since the conference is held every other year. Linda Ybarra thought Saroj was a wonderful speaker and she got great ideas from the session. Katie Dunneback thought that having in-depth emergence in the topic was great because she is new to children’s programs.  Karen Day suggested not having three days, but using the first day for a speaker like Saroj and then having breakouts on the second day.  The librarians that she brought from her LSA talked about this on the way home.  Debb Green really liked the focus of the keynote speakers with one day being for youth and one day being for teens.  Sonia suggested repeating some of the breakout sessions.  Kathy appreciated all the handouts.  Katie Dunneback wanted to know if it was hard to get speakers and Mary said it varied from year to year.  Maria would like five breakouts and likes that there are choices.  Eileen also likes that there are choices and would like to see some of the sessions repeated on Friday.  Deb enjoyed the fact she could listen to the speaker over lunch and relax.  Mary has the hotel book for Tuesday and Wednesday for Kids First in April 2009.  Most members felt that the change in days would not be a problem.  Phyllis suggested that first time attendees be identified as such on their name tags.  Katie Dunneback suggested an orientation for new attendees.  Several thought the Gateway was a good location with good food.  Mary will keep the Committee updated.

7.  Youth Services Subdivision (YSS) Update – Katie Dreyer

Katie gave an update on the goal setting session that YSS had in January.

Katie reported that YSS will have two concurrent sessions at ILA on technology and sign language.  She asked for suggestions for a session for ILA in 2008.  The silent auction that YSS had at "Kids First" was very successful and they will be using that money to bring a national speaker for ILA in 2008.

8.  Meeting Dates

Mary reminded the group that we will be meeting in person at the State Library in September.  She will send out suggested dates and get the meeting scheduled.  The State Library will provide lunch.

No other meetings have been scheduled.
