Youth Services Advisory Council

February 6, 2007

Mary Cameron began the meeting at 11:30 a.m. with introductions.  Mary reminded Council members that membership changes take effect at the May meeting.  Linda Armitage has retired from her position and Angie Martin-Schwarze will be leaving her position soon.

Members present:  Mary Cameron, Kim Bell, Loretta Brickley, Karen Day, Katie Dreyer, Carmen Epstein, Jerri Heid, Brenda Knox, Joa LaVille, Maria Levetzow, Angie Martin-Schwarze, Missy Mayfield-Cook, Nancy Pudenz, Beth Marie Quanbeck, Eileen Redinger, Kathy Rogers, Carol Rosenbaum, Mary Siegner, Barb Sowers, Terri Tesch, Deb Tobias and Carol Simmons.

Members absent:  Cathy Shaw and Pat Engemann.

Minutes from the November 2, 2006 meeting were approved as presented.

2007 Summer Library Program Update.  Mary Cameron told the Council that she is ready to go with the workshops and has a big load of library science books and other give-a-ways ready.    Kathy Rogers and Katie Dreyer are this year’s presenters.  Katie told everyone that she has been very busy especially the last two weeks reading and packing.  She is looking forward to the workshops and hopes the weather gets better.  Kathy is also looking forward to the workshops.  She told the Council that a power point presentation will be part of the workshops this year.  She and Katie thought this would help participants with note taking and the power point will be a handout also. Beth Marie Quanbeck welcomed Katie to the Central Iowa LSA.  Karen Day reported on the 2007 PSAs and that they are already located on the CSLP Web site and a flyer will be available at the workshops.  Cameron said she thought the teen PSA was outstanding this year.  Beth Marie asked about registrations and Mary told her 522 have already registered for workshops, but she thinks there will be additional sign-ups. Another reminder will be sent for the last week of the workshops. Mary is very pleased with the numbers so far.

Carmen has the teen workshops ready to go.  Registration is at 100 for these workshops, so far.  There will be a flyer in the summer reading packets at the children’s workshops and reminders will be sent on email too.

2008 Summer Library Program Update.  Mary has seen most of the preliminary chapters for the “Catch the Reading Bug” manual and all manual changes are due at the end of  February.  Mary also just received the chapters for the teen  “Metamorphosis” manual.  Jean Gullickson from the Carnegie-Stout Library in Dubuque will be presenting the children’s workshops in 2008.  Courtney Alfaro, from the West Des Moines Library will be presenting the teen workshops.  Mary announced that Highsmith will be offering two pilot projects next year for incentives – books as incentives and custom online ordering of items that libraries want to personalize.  Harry Bliss is doing the artwork for the children’s program and has already been doing preliminary sketches. Jan Duursema is the artist for the teen artwork.  Eileen Redinger shared with the Council that she was pleased with the purchase of the insect finger puppets from Oriental Trading ($4.95 per doz.) but not to get the finger rings.

Kits First Update.  Kids 1st is rapidly approaching, April 25-27, 2007.  A flyer was sent last week and Mary is already getting calls regarding which sessions will be on which date.  Sessions will not be finalized until late March.  She asked everyone for ideas for inexpensive door prizes.  Several were discussed but she asked that if you have an ideas please e-mail her so she won’t miss anything.  Beth Marie asked what CE credits would be given and Mary thought 5 for Thursday and 4 for Friday but she would have to work on that and get back to her.  Mary also asked if the Council would like to go to dinner as a group during the conference and several members would love to get together.  Mary and Jerri Heid will work on finding a place and then e-mail everyone with place and time.  She also wanted everyone to know that they will need to sign-up with the paper form and not through the CE Catalog.  Using the online catalog didn’t work well for the way the conference is set up.

Youth Services Subdivision Update.  Katie told the Council that they had met at Mary’s house a couple of weeks ago for a goal setting session and that some goals had changed.  The group wants to keep the hospitality room idea, so people could network.  They would like to do a raffle for services, story telling, murder mystery, etc. where people could donate their time to a service and people could buy tickets to put in the different service baskets and have their names drawn as a fund raiser, but need ILA approval for that idea.  This money would go towards speakers for the next session.  She also reminded the Council to join YSS, if they haven’t already. Goals will be outlined in the next newsletter.
