The Public Librarian's Role in Early Literacy Development
Early (emergent) literacy is what children know about reading and writing before they can actually read and write.
Public librarians may provide one of a child's first opportunities to interact with books. Librarians have been providing preschool storytimes for years and now many libraries provide lapsits for babies, toddler storytimes,
and outreach services to child care centers and preschools.
Librarians often incorporate the early literacy strategies into their storytimes.
