Session 3 - Library Operations and Policy Development

Developing and approving library policies are one of the primary responsibilities of library boards.  Seeing that each policy is put into practice is an important aspect of the library director’s job.  Policy discussions among the Board, ensure that prior planning take place before new policies are adopted and before existing policies are changed.  Policy discussions among the staff ensure a consistent and objective response to questions from the public as policies are carried out.

Policy manuals should be well thought out and carefully written.  They serve as a blueprint for effective library operation and underscore the library’s service philosophy.  A systematic review process helps guarantee that policies remain timely and subject to change.
