Martin Appointed to State Library Commission
Gohlinghorst Assumes Duties as Commission Chair
Tom Martin was recently appointed by Governor Chet Culver to a four year term on the Iowa Commission of Libraries.
The Iowa Commission of Libraries has the rule-making authority for the State Library of Iowa, and receives and approves its budget. It also appoints the State Librarian. The Commission is responsible for seeing that the State Library fulfills its mission to advocate for Iowa libraries and promote excellence and innovation in library services in order to provide statewide access to information for all Iowans.
Martin is vice president of Farmers & Merchants Savings Bank in Iowa City. He is a member of the board of trustees of the Iowa City Public Library and a trustee of Willowwind School.
Martin said libraries have three very important roles in every community.
“Libraries serve as a primary promoter of literacy, are predominate providers of information and are one of the amenities of life,” said Martin. “It will be my pleasure as a member of the Iowa Commission of Libraries to work with libraries as they strive to better fulfill those roles.”
Monica Gohlinghorst took the reins as Commission Chair on June 18th, 2007. Her first term on the Commission began in May 2001 and her second term ends April 30, 2009.
