State Library partners in delivering library programs, funding, and technology

The American Bulgarian Library Exchange is an independent organization helping Bulgarian librarians who want to improve their library collections and services and reach out to America to begin a cultural dialog. Eight Iowa libraries have partnerships with Bulgarian libraries.

The State Library's partnership with the AEAs make it possible for libraries to be part of statewide licensing for EBSCOhost and to take advantage of discounts available through the Iowa Educator's Consortium (IEC). Iowa has 12 area education agencies (AEAs). The AEAs function as an intermediate service unit and assist the Department of Education in providing services and support to school districts and to schools.

The Bibliographical Center for Research (BCR) is a nonprofit, multi-state library cooperative that has served the library community since its founding in 1935 by providing cost-effective library and information services. An agreement with the State Library of Iowa allows all types of libraries in Iowa to use BCR services as a member institution.

The Iowa Center for the Book is an affiliate of the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress. The mission of the Iowa Center for the Book is to stimulate public interest in books, reading literacy and libraries.

The Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) is a grassroots consortium of states working together to provide high-quality summer reading program materials for children at the lowest cost possible for their public libraries. Mary Cameron, Youth Services Consultant for the State Library, currently serves as president of CSLP.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has funded programs to sustain and expand public access computing in Iowa public libraries. The grants have included hardware grants to individual libraries and three grants to the State Library: Training Program Grant, Rural Sustainability and Staying Connected.

The State Library of Iowa worked with the libraries at Iowa State University and the University of Iowa to create the Iowa Heritage Digital Collections. The Web site is an open, publicly accessible virtual collection relating to Iowa history and culture.

State of Iowa Libraries Online (SILO) is a joint program of the State Library of Iowa and the Iowa State University Library. SILO project staff maintain a statewide union catalog and Web-based interlibrary loan application for Iowa libraries, and work with Iowa public libraries to facilitate high spped Internet access and statewide access to electronic databases, such as FirstSearch and EBSCOhost.

Iowa's Library Service Areas provide consulting, continuing education, interlibrary loan and reference services to libraries throughout the state.

The State Library of Iowa is the state's lead agency for the State Data program, a cooperative program with the U.S. Census Bureau. The purpose of the program is to increase the availability of census data in Iowa and to help people use it. The State Library also is Iowa's liaison to the Federal-State Cooperative Program for Population Estimates. The program fosters cooperation between the states and the U.S. Census Bureau in the preparation of population estimates and the development of improved methods, joint research, and policies for population estimates.

Designated as Iowa’s Patent and Trademark Depository Library, the State Library receives and houses copies of patent and trademark material as well as three databases from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The obligations of this cooperation with the USPTO include making this collection freely available to the public, assisting the public in efficient use of the collection, and protecting the integrity of the collection. Both patents and trademarks are a rich resource for small businesses, research and development firms, university and government laboratories, independent inventors, and entrepreneurs.
