Part E - School Library Media Technology

  • FIRST, determine the number of computers located in or under supervision of the school library. This might include some computers not located in the library.
    • (Note: For this question, the terms "computer", "terminal", and "workstation" are considered synonymous.)
  • Enter this number on Line 1 in Col. A.
  • THEN, determine the number of computers that are:
    • located elsewhere in the school (like a computer lab, mini-lab, administrative office, etc.), and
    • are not under supervision of the school library, and
    • are connected to LMC resources. (Do not include any that are not connected to LMC resources)
  • Enter this number on Line 1 in Col. B.
  • On Lines 2 through 6, enter the number of the Line 1 Totals, in each column, that have the accesses, options, etc. specified on each of Lines 2 through 6.
  • A computer in either of the Line 1 Totals may be included on as many of Lines 2 through 6 as necessary.
  • For example, a computer in the school library might have Internet access and a school home page. This computer would be counted on both Lines 2 and 5 under Col. A.

In our example library there are 5 computers in the library or supervised by the library on line E 1 (a), and 50 computers located elsewhere that are connected to LMC resources on line E 1 (b).  The number of computers in the library (or supervised by the library) that provide access to various technology services are in Col. A.

Other computers in the school that link to library resources are in Col. B.  For instance, line E 3(b) shows that 50 other computers link to the library catalog, which is on the Local Area Network, while on line E 2 (b), only 40 computers are linked to the Internet.

1. Internet

The Internet is the collection of networks that connect government, university and commercial agencies and is unified by the use of a single protocol suite, TCP/IP.  Note: Internet access includes one or more of the following services: world wide web, telnet, file transfer protocol, e-mail, or subscription databases.

2. Connected to LMC

A computer is considered connected to the MC if it is the same LAN, or if it has icons on the desktop or Bookmarks that are intended to point students to LMC resources.
