Preservation

Funders that have interest and priorities in historic preservation, promoting rehabilitation or restoration, promoting cultural heritage and supporting architecture preservation.   Also supported are cataloging of art museum collections and rehabilitation and preserving archival materials. 

Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) is an independent federal agency that promotes the preservation, enhancement, and productive use of our nation's historic resources, and advises the President and Congress on national historic preservation policy. http://www.achp.gov/ 12/06

American Express Company. On behalf of American Express Travel Related Services, American Express Financial Advisors and American Express Bank. Focus on three programs: Community Service, Cultural Heritage (Historic Preservation), Economic Independence. Giving primarily in operating locations in various cities in Iowa. Grants made to nonprofit organizations 501 (c)(3) in cities where employees and advisors live and work. Community Service grants are forwarded by American Express employees or advisors. Funding area of cultural heritage protects important natural and man-made cultural or historic sites around the world, and also supports art and culture unique to countries and regions.   Since Iowa is not one of the five areas mentioned on the Web site, Iowa projects will only be considered if submitted through an internal process which requires endorsement from an American Express employee in the area. www.americanexpress.com/corp/philanthropy 12/06

Conservation Assessment Program (CAP). Administered by the Heritage Preservation for the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Provides funds on a noncompetitive, first-come, first-served basis for conservation assessment of a museum's collections. This does not cover library collections, but if a library has a museum or collection artifacts they may apply. CAP supports a 2-day site visit by a conservation professional to perform the assessment and up to 3 days to write the report.

Getty, J. Paul Trust. Provides support for scholarships in the history of art and conservation of works of art. Assists U.S. colleges and universities in planning for the preservation of historic buildings, sites, and landscapes. Supports architecture preservation. Also supported are cataloging of art museum collections, interpretive projects and libraries. The program does not support operating expenses or endowment funds, building construction or maintenance, or the production or acquisition of works of art. The Greater Cedar Rapids Foundation. To enhance the quality of life in the community by supporting creative and innovative programs, and occasional capital projects and community development. Supports grants for general, building/renovation, and historic preservation. Limited to greater Cedar Rapids and surrounding Linn County. Proposals are invited from the submitted letter of intent. Historical Society of Iowa. Historic Preservation Projects. Several programs are available for tax credit, loans, and tax exemption from the State Historical Society of Iowa, Community Programs Bureau. Iowa Community Cultural Grant Program provides matching grants to cities and nonprofit, tax-exempt community groups for the purposes of providing jobs for Iowans while promoting an area's cultural, ethnic, and historical heritages. Eligible projects include festivals, music or drama productions, historic renovations, and cultural programming. For museums, libraries, arts councils and tourist attractions in Iowa. Iowa Department of Economic Development. Rural Main Street Community and Partner Main Street Community Programs.  Historic preservation projects may be linked to economic funding available from the Community Development Block Grant Program in the community facilities and services fund and the Main Street Iowa program. Provides grants to cities and counties for a wide variety of purposes including public facilities, housing rehabilitation, neighborhood revitalization and economic development. Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Recreation Infrastructure Grants Program. Possibly the following could be used in conjunction with landscaping for library restoration or building. Funds available for cities, counties, organizations and association to acquire, repair, renovate, and develop public outdoor recreation complexes. Project eligible for funds include those with facilities for observation and sightseeing, picnics, visitors or education centers, camping, swimming, playground equipment and support functions. Other eligible projects are lake and pond construction, landscaping and plantings for wildlife food and cover and renovation or redevelopment of existing facilities that have deteriorated or become outdated. Iowa Historic Preservation Alliance. Iowa's Best Preservation Awards. Co-sponsored with the Community Programs Bureau of the State Historical Society of Iowa and the Department of Cultural Affairs. Main Street Iowa. Iowa Department of Economic Development. Downtown revitalization using historic preservation as a tool to attract new and renewed investments into communities. This is training program with no funding. National Film Preservation Foundation. Grants for film preservation work. Two categories are Partnership Grant - funding for film preservation work at laboratories and post-production houses donating services to the NFPF and Laboratory Grants - supports laboratory preservation work on endangered films. National Trust for Historic Preservation. The National Trust is a resource for information about historic preservation, preservation services, and programs to aid local individuals and organizations in the work of revitalizing the livability of their communities. Offers two separate types of matching fund sources to public agencies for preservation of historic structures.  These two grants are the Johanna Favrot Fund for Historic Preservation and the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Fund for Historic Interiors.  Grant awards may be made for activities and projects such as:  obtaining the services of consultants with expertise in areas such as architecture, planning, paint analysis, archeology, fund raising, media relations, producing and marketing print and video communications materials, sponsoring preservation conferences and workshops or designing and implementing innovative preservation education programs. Revitalization Assistance for Community Improvement (RACI). Partnership of Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino and Iowa Department of Economic Development. Target Iowa cities with a population base of 30,000 or less. Supports restoration of historical building or rehabilitation of facilities. Eligible applicants are city, county or Council of Governments on behalf of a community group. Travelors Conservation Foundation.  Tourism Cares for Tomorrow exists to preserve, conserve and promote the responsible use of our world's natural, cultural and historic treasures and to support education and research to help secure the positive future of travel and tourism worldwide.Tourism Cares for Tomorrow distributes charitable grants to worthy tourism-related nonprofit organizations worldwide for conservation or preservation of exceptional cultural, historic, or natural sites. Historically, typical grants have ranged between $10,000 and $20,000 and have been considered for either capital improvements or appropriate educational programs. The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts
. Foundation awards grants to not-for-profit cultural organizations working in the visual arts. Areas of giving are: 1) grants for curatorial programs at museums, artist's organizations, and other organizations that assist in the innovative presentation of the visual arts and 2) grants to organizations working to preserve historic buildings, districts and landscapes, and for organizations that seek to increase public participation in the urban planning process.
