Individualized Continuing Education Plan
An Individualized Continuing Education Plan (ICEP) is a program that allows a person to create a customized learning activity. The program is designed for the flexibility of the learner who may need to gain certain knowledge or aquire a specific skill but has no formal way to achieve it.
An ICEP must be developed in consultation with a Library Service Area or State Library consultant who serves as the learning advisor. The plan must have learning objectives, description of activities to be used to meet the objectives, a realistic timeframe and measurable and/or observable results. Maximum number of hours that can be received per ICEP is 10.
Examples of ICEPs:
- Learning about wikis, blogs or podcasting
- Writing a procedural manual
- Creating a database
Learning activities might include:
- Doing reading and research on a particular topic
- Working with a mentor
- Keeping a learning journal of your tests or experiences
- Doing on-the-job training at a location other than your library
Measurable and/or observable results might be:
- A staff wiki that provides all library policies and procedures
- A circulation manual that has all the department's policies and procedures
- An Access database that is an index of all the library's sheet music
Next Steps:
- If you are interested in purusing an ICEP, your first step is to speak with an LSA or State Library consultant with whom you can talk out your ideas for the project.
- Next, working with your advisor, you will need to fill out a Learning Plan, which includes writing learning objectives, activities to support those objectives, a timeline and the expected outcome of your project. The Learning Plan needs to be signed by you, your advisor and the State Library Continuing Education Consultant (who may also act as the advisor on the project).
- After completing the work, you will need to submit a report to the State Library Continuing Education consultant that follows your previously submitted Learning plan, including a brief review and description of your activities as they were conducted, an evaluation of your learning objectives and a representation of the outcome of your project.
- After receiving this material, the Continuing Education Consultant will award the CE credit due.
