Cataloging Internship Position Open

The Danish Immigrant Museum is located in rural western Iowa, halfway between Des Moines, Iowa, and Omaha, Nebraska.  The Family History and Genealogy Center, the Museum’s research library, collects materials in Danish and English on Danish history, immigrants and Danish-Americans, their communities, churches, and cultural and social institutions. The FHGC is staffed by a librarian/manager and volunteers.  For further information see www.danishmuseum.org.

 

Position Description:

Library school student or recent graduate with technical services and cataloging background and/or course work wanted to work with English- and Danish-language materials in library of national Danish immigrant museum. 

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of organization of library materials
  • Understanding of MARC
  • Basic Windows skills
  • Basic Internet skills and familiarity with searching bibliographic databases.

 
Desirable:

  • MARC cataloging experience
  • Familiarity with genealogical materials
  • Familiarity with Danish or other Scandinavian language

 
Duties:

  • Enter library catalog records into PastPerfect™ software and its various components and into SILO for materials owned by the museum’s Family History & Genealogy Center.
  • Use SILO and other library catalogs and databases to verify forms of names and subject entries.
  • Consult with library manager on possible deviations from established patterns (particularly with respect to additional information on records).
  • Print call number labels from PastPerfect™ and affix to books.
  • Add all forms of names and subject terms to appropriate PastPerfect™ authority files.

The internship position is full-time for an academic term or longer, depending on the applicant’s availability. Hourly wage is $8.00 and will include assistance with locating local housing.  Individuals with cataloging experience interested in working part-time will also be considered.
