Directions for Requesting Medical Materials
Requests For Medical Items Not Available At The State Library
State Employees who have interlibrary loan requests for materials not held in the State Library’s collection should contact Rinda Kramme at the State Library at 515-281-6920, 800-248-4483, or ill@lib.state.ia.us. There is no charge for this service. Articles and books usually arrive in 3 to 10 days depending on the source.
Persons who are not state government employees have a number of other options for obtaining materials.
They include:
Requesting items through local public libraries or other libraries that they are affiliated with. There may be a charge depending on the particular library’s policy. Des Moines area hospital libraries and universities also have medical materials available and will assist “walk-ins” with requests for specific books or journal titles housed in their collections.
Journal articles held in the collections of the University of Iowa Hardin Library of the Health Sciences may be requested directly from the library for $7.00 an article. Telephone requests can be made for an additional $5.00 per article requested or by fax for an additional $3.00. (For-profit institutions - $20.00)

Journal articles not held in Iowa can be requested directly from larger regional libraries or document delivery services. InfoNOW is the fee-based document delivery and research service from the University of Minnesota Libraries.
