Reference Services for Health Professionals

Medical Library services are available to Iowa health professionals who do not have access to health science libraries in their area. Medical Library staff can perform online searches in medical databases that are available at the State Library and mail, fax, or email the results to you. Requests for journal articles at the State Library can be filled at a cost of $.20 per page. We can provide library locations for materials that are not in the State Library's collections, but we cannot order materials for you unless you are a state employee.

Medical online databases available for searching include:Clinical Pharmacology, Cochrane databases for evidence-based medicine, Consumer Health Complete, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Health Source Consumer, Health Source Nursing, Iowa Public Health Information, Psychological Abstracts, and PubMed(Medline).

HealthInfoIowa at www.HealthInfoIowa.org is the State Library's consumer health web site which includes reliable health information web sites as well as information on how to find good sites.

The National Library of Medicine provides additional specialized medical databases for consumers and professionals that can be accessed free of charge from any computer. Go to http://www.nlm.nih.gov. You are welcome to send library patrons directly to us for additional information and assistance. Please contact us at 515-281-5772 or 800-248-4483 or email us at medref@lib.state.ia.us. Our fax number is 515-281-3384
